I purchased a brand new shift motor from ebay for my 91 explorer. The motor was from a 98 Explorer. The plug was different, but the colors of the wires were the same. So I cut my harness off my old one, and attached it to the new motor. I installed it, I pushed the 4x4 button and the electronic box in the back clicked about 10 times real quick. It continued to do this every time I hit that button. I tried the reset switch on that box, but still will not shift. The motor seems to try to turn. It jerks back and forth, moving about 1/8 of an inch back and forth, then stops.

Is there a way to adjust this, or something I am doing wrong? I read in an old post once that someone has taken this off, and did something because it gets "confused". Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated.

Motor...

Try Dr Bob page Dead Link Removed, it explain the most common probleme with shift motor. Hope this helps.

I got your email. Try the above mentioned site and go through the troubleshooting steps, most time the contacts inside the little round cover are either bent or dirty. That should fix it. What you had asked me about was an extreme case and I wouldn't recommend hard wiring the motor except as a last resort.
