4X4 shift motor plroblems

I have a manual 91 explorer xlt with bad u joints and ball joints, recently my 4wd got stuck in 4 low so i took the shift motor off and turned the pin to 2 hi but i cant turn the motor to the right position so that it can go back on. i cant use the 4wd due to the u joints and ball joints so i was wondering if i can just leave the shift motor off?

It got stuck in 4 LOW because the motor either could not shift it back out, due to binding inside, or the motor would not turn. When you shifted it out manually, it turned easily?

How long do you want to leave the motor off? imp
