'00 Mountianeer 5.0
I bought a 2000 Mercury Mountianeer last winter and was wondering how I can tell if it is AWD or not. It has the V8. I know it is not 4x4, but AWD is a little different. The biggest reason I ask is because it gets a little sideways during the winters here in Chicago.

Any help in determining this would be greatly appreciated.

And yes, I feel like a retard for worrying about this after I have driven the truck for so long.

If you don't see a set of CV axles in the front then it isn't a AWD V8 Model. You can also confirm it based upon the VIN number.

or look for a transfercase/front driveshaft under the truck on the back of the transmission. :)

How would I use the VIN#?? I have no idea what CV axle looks like.

Thanks for answering the questions so quickly.

basically you can look behind your front tires and see if there are axleshafts going to them through the suspension or not.

Easy way to determine is look the rear axle (under the truck, in the center) see the rear driveshaft? Does it go into a box with another driveshaft on the drivers side heading to the front end? Or does it just go to the back of a transmission, no other driveshafts

You can look up your VIN # online and find out what each number means, google.

Meaning one of the numbers/letters in your VIN determines the 2wd, AWD or 4x4.

I will take a look this evening. Thanks again for all your help.
