Has anyone attempted to make a box (similar to a stealth box) to install a sub in the rear storage compartment? If not, is it feasible or a waste of time? I was thinking of making one out of fiberglass (fiberboard face w/glass box), would this work? I don't know a whole lot about car audio (just enough to get myself in trouble) so any help would be greatful.

I don't believe anyone here on this board has attempted to make one from scratch, but I suppose you could. You don't have to know TOO much about car audio to make a box for a speaker. At minimum, you need to think about if you can make a box you feel will successfully fit in there, and house a speaker. A speaker has a minimum requirement of air space for a sealed box, and some space behind the speaker itself, so you need to take that into consideration, sub depth and volume requirements. With the right volume and some polyfill, you should be okay as long as your box is well made. Those would be the basics.

It's just whether or not what you intend to make and the work spent on it is worth it versus the price of a premade one. The premades vary in price, but some people have gotten some real steals is all... Getting the fiberglass thick enough so the box is solid, doesn't rattle and mounts as tightly as the prefabs would be things to consider.

However, there are some real car audio buffs in here, so I'm sure you would get tons of help if you needed it!

Good luck!

When I got my system installed, the original plan was to build a fiberglass box to fit behind the right rear panel, but they happened to have a stealthbox lying around, so we used that instead. So it definitely is possible. Unfortunately I have never worked with fiberglass, so I can't help you there, but I just wanted to let you know that it can be done.

Homebuilt stealth box...

OK, I'm in the thick of it. I'm making my own sub enclosure for the right rear compartment. The way I'm doing it is by making partitions that "box out" behind the compartment hole and a heavy plate for the sub mount that attaches outside (sandwiching)the factory panel. The inner fender surface will serve as the back of the enclosure. I will glue oak stringers to the fender surface to eliminate any flex.
My sub requires a .6 cu ft sealed enclosure. I got it just the right size by filling a 12"x 12" square cardboard box 7.2" deep with shipping popcorn. Then I taped my enclosure pieces in place and started filling it with the popcorn making adjustments to get the enclosure to come out full of popcorn. For the non-rocket scientists out there, no, the shipping popcorn will not be used in the working enclosure. It is just a good way to set up the box at the correct volume... :)
I'm thinking of posting some pics, but damn, it's pretty ugly at this point. But, the end result should look and work great!!
