Superchip vs Hypertech?? Hmmm...

Hypertech Rep

Has anyone ever been to http://www.pickuptruck.com ? On that board there is an acutal rep from Hypertech that monitors the board and answers questions as often as possible. I see him in the (don't shoot me) Chevy section. (My fiance has a chevy pickup). Just FYI if anyone is interested.

Here is the link/thread he posted (the rep)

Sean, 2 reasons not yet listed

one of the truck magazines did a before/after dyno test of the Superchip on a late 90's Ranger 4.0 and the chip alone gave 16 or 17 rear wheel hp and torque in the 20's. After reading that I checked out their site and saw more tests they had done and decided to buy one. The 2nd reason is a 30 money back guarantee, if you don't like you aren't stuck with it!! How much better can it get? Does Hyperwreck :) offer that with their chips?

Score:
Hypertech - 3
Superchip - 3

I definitely like the idea of adding a total of 16-17 REARWHEEL hp(not just engine HP). That is definitely a plus in my mind, and I was tempted to give Superchip the extra point and make it 4-3 Superchip due to their moneyback 30-day guarantee....I still might.....Anybody got anything else solid on either of these chips? How about ease of installation and things along that line? Keep em coming guys...This is the first time I've ever had this many responses on one of my threads....Woohoo!(I repeat, I am SUCH a dork). Let the info keep flowing....

I initially had some problems with my Hypertech when I got it. I sent it back to them and it was back in my truck in 3 days. The tech support guys were super nice and friendly, and they said they would replace the chip for free for two years if I had any more problems with it. But I'm problem free except for that first time, I think they had mislabeled some chips, no biggie.

That is correct. Hypertech will replace it for up to two years if a problem arises. As for the instal.....a screwdriver, a socket set,cue tips, and some rubbing alchol is all thats needed. It took me about 30 minutes to do in the driveway. No problems out of the chip yet. All you do is pull out the computer and remove the tab on the rear of it. Then take the cue tip and remove the grease ford puts on the computer and GENTLY remove the thin plastic cover over the taps on the computer. Insert the chip and screw down the bracket. You may need to put on the supplied shim that comes with it. Reinstall the computer and your off.

I think money back is more important that a 2 year warranty... the people at JET took my chip back, no questions asked... Im sure superchip would too if something was wrong with the chip... oh well.

nick

Ok, well, in light of the arguments for warranties on both sides(and my anticipation to buy a friggin chip already) I am gonna make the score:
Hypertech - 4
Superchip - 4

The "kicker" for this game would be if anyone had any information on the actual gains from the Hypertech module. Also, on the Superchip side, if anybody had any clue as to the ease of installation. Keep it comin! The game's almost up.....

Uhm... you get a discount for Superchip if you mention this board when you order through smarty parts... or something like that. Plus... time travel is nice too.

nick

you get another 2or3 mpg with the hypertech plus the ability to burn some rubber. Can you do that flyguy???
:P :P :P

Ok....It sounds like Superchip is the winner due to the fact that there's a discount if you mention this page from smartyparts....The mileage gain, leebo mentioned was already talked about and therefore, Superchip is the winner. That doesn't mean that Hypertech sucks, it's just that I am going to try the Superchip. If I'm really not pleased with it, I'll take it back and get a Hypertech. Now for one question that has been bugging me(even though I've asked other people about it and they never responded).......I am planning to add Borla headers and possibly a high-flow cat....Should I do the headers and the cat first and then add the Superchip or should I just go ahead with the purchase of the chip? This is critical as I do not wish to buy another chip or have to have it reprogrammed for some ungodly amount of money. Are there any other mods that you can think of that I should always do BEFORE I install the chip? Anything at all? Click on the thing at the bottom of this reply to know what my future mods are(the Supercharger is in the very distant future and is almost a non-entity)....Tell me which mods, if any I need to complete before ordering a chip....Thanks guys for helping me out...Just need a bit more info....

the install of

a Superchip is almost identical to any add-on chip. Remove the pass. kick panel, take out a screw, remove the cover on the computer, clean the contacts and pop on the chip. (I believe that's one up for Superchip)

I have yet to see a third party dyno test of Hypertech.

Scott..
I mean what mods should I do prior to adding the chip. I heard somewhere that the restrictiveness of your exhaust will mess with the computer if you change it...All I wanna know is should I get headers before or after the chip? I would like to purchase the chip now, but I am going to be ordering the headers within 1 month after ordering the chip. So, once again, click the thing that says "Honda Killer" at the bottom of my reply and check out my future mods. I want to know if I should wait to do the chip until after I've done any of the ones I listed, other than the Supercharger because I am not even close to having enough money for that. Hit me back....

scott.....it's the same for the hypertech too.

Make sure that the Superchip will "learn" the mods you do if you install the chip first. Some chips only learn how your engines works and sets it's terms only once. I know that is how the Jet chip works. After that you buy a new one or reprogram the old one. Both costing more money. I think the Superchip can learn the difference whenever you reset the computer, but make sure just in case. I know the Hypertech. All in all though the two are mostly the same chip that do the same thing. So I'd go with price and service.

Well... it shouldnt matter which one you do first... If you want the custom chip. Its gunna cost you $100 extra no matter what... later, if you decide you want it customed for your mods... you just mail it in... also.. superchip seems to have the cheapest fee for customizing... JET starts around $600 I think. Oh well. Also..Ive asked around about custom chips before... and it seems that whether or not you should get the custom chip with headers is kind of up to you... some say you dont have to.. and some say ya do.. oh well

nick

sorry Sean I missed your point

I would make the mods before getting the chip then have it custom burned for them. I'm not sure of it's learning capabilities, I plan on checking though. I'm also going to find out if you have a custom chip made and make more changes if they will redo the chip(if it even needs it). Although it may learn, I'm not sure.

I've done two power mods since getting my Hypertech chip: the TB and headers. Both times, I let the computer reset itself and relearn at idle. I have had no problems with my chip, and it seems to work well with my other mods. Just to experiment, I did take the chip out today and drove around for a while. The truck felt like s**t. I put it back in and immediately felt the difference again. Again, it's not a custom chip, but it seems to adapt well as the stock computer tries to deal with new mods.

SeanM,

Although I no longer drive my wife's Explorer (returned off lease) I just today joined your list to keep up with Explorers. My wife will be leasing an other one when she returns to work. I would recommend the Superchip. I had one on my 97 F-150 and now on my 2000 too. The first thing I did when I got the truck home was call up Mike Troyer and order a Superchip. It is custom programmed to remove the top speed limiter and move the 5500 rpm rev limiter to 6500. I need this last one to climb hills (Sand dunes) and not have to shift gears.
I actually towed my wife's Explorer from Drummondville, Québec to Windsor, Ontario. Once without the chip and once with it. Yup, you guessed it night and day.
The nice thing about it is that it will adjust to most modifications you care to make. No need to return the chip.
Customer service with Superchip is excellent. Just a phone call or e-mail away and a quick reply is forthcoming.

Regards

Jean Marc Chartier

I agree with JM

I bought mine directly from Superchip Inc. not from a dealer and they were/still are great. I just put the new 66mm TB on last night(been busy) and reconnected the battery, installed my chip. Let's just say it's nice to have the ability to smoke 31x10.5's

I don't know if it was the chip, but

My brother-in-law had a Hypertech in his 95 Monte Carlo z34 and boy when he installed it, that thing ripped some major speed. I was so amazed that I ran out and purchased one for my truck. The Hypertech sucked on my truck. The only noticeable difference was acceleration, but that was on the highway. If I would have dynoed the truck I am positive I would have seen no HP gains. I am planning on using the Superchip sometime in the near future.

Do you have to use 92 Octane to take advantage of the HP increases on either chip? I heard the Superchip can use lower octane without scarificing performance! Can this be true?
