I have a 99 explorer sport and i put in new black headlights. but in order to get the stock headlights out their are little tabs on them and to get them out you basically have to break them out. i had to break all the tabs to get them out because their isn't any room to squeeze them, just for future reference is their any way to get them out without breaking them? because i want to do a hid lighting in there next but i dont want to break the headlights..

pinch the tabs with bent needle nose pliers, or flat head screw drivers and pull

OR you can actually unscrew the adjuster out 100% and then no need to pinch the tabs

If you get all new adjusters then you can break your old ones and get the lights out easy (only good when installing all new lights and adjusters)

Help with swapping headlights

Ok i had very long needlenose plyers and the problem is that to get at the tabs u gotta reach down and they were pointed like this

so to squeeze them i would have to get under and squeeze the top but there is no room.. and u cant twist them.. get it ??

un screw the adjuster all the way out with a phillips head :)

have used tiny flat heads to get them out, one side at a time, but removing the whole adjuster (screwdriver) ensures you dont break any parts

uh..

their is more than one set of clips. there is one that is the bottom part the main part of the light where u can reef on it with a philips but ye.. the top part u have to break them unless u take the front end apart..

Did you remove the grill?

I friggin hope so! I cant imagine trying to do a Gen II headlight without removing the grill

Yeah- if you remove the grille, everything is right there. Never had a problem... I pull them off at the junkyard all the time.

I've popped mine out twice without removing the grille. It takes a bit of wiggling but can be done. I still had to pull it to get in to be able to trim the header for the projectors. Figures!
