Anybody ever swap in an enternal cam 4.0 in place of the sohc 4.0 engine? What did you have to change to make it work, Thanks.

I started typing what needs changing to go from 4.0 SOHC to 5.0 pushrod, but there is way way to much, forget it. Better option is to buy a 5.0L explorer and gut it out. The pushrod V8 is the way to go if you can do it though.

If you want to use the old 4.0 OHV engine you are also crazzzzy as this is a pile! Thats why ford dumped it. Why don’t you get a new or reco'd SOHC engine? the new 2000+ model lasts forever and goes like hell, it actually even beats the 5.0 V8.

I'm just trying to use the 4.0 engine I already have to get it going again without spending alot.

You are trying to replace the SOHC 4.0L with a OHV 4.0L?

This is what I call working backwards.
For the amount of work invovled (wiring, mounts, engine mods to make it fit, etc) you mine as well go with a better engine or replace your SOHC with another SOHC IMO.

Now with that said of course both engines were available for your truck, so yes it is possible, but dont expect to just unbolt one and bolt in the other, there are many changes to th etruck also required. Trans/exhaust/wiring is just the tip of the iceburg.
