i just recently purchased my first ex from my parents, all the regular maint has been done and it has 140,000 miles. theyve had it since new and it has never had any problems, not even so much as an alternator or starter or anything. my question is id like to change to synthetic oil but is it even worth it for an engine this old?? also is it rare for an explorer not too have any major problems at all with this many miles????

mine has 170000 plus and nothing major except ball joints..

my 2002 explorer has 108000 and has had more problems than my 1995.

father in law's 04 had its tranny replaced with like 20k on it plus other prpbs, my 98 has only had a rubber boot tear since i owned it and dealer repair records show nothing major

If you go synthetic, be sure to go full 100% synthetic. Synthetic blends aren't that much better than dino oil.

I changed mine over to Amsoil synthetic at 130,000 miles and use Seafoam in the engine from time to time...runs like a champ.

I see it from a different point of view.
140,000 Miles on it with no problems? Why would you want to change anything? Continue to use what ever they used in it.

If your going synthetic, get a filter to match. The newer filters take advantage of the syn oil and filter smaller particles than a standard paper media filter.

And, do tell, what kind of filter is this?

Guys, let's not start this same discussion/argument again. Every single week somebody else comes on and asks this same question and every week it turns into the same silly argument. Nothing against carlover asking the question, but use the search function and you'll find tons of discussion of this topic.

I agree if its been trouble free why change? The syns will free up a few HP but if your not looking for every little HP its not worth it in my opinion.

What about "freeing up" some extra mileage? That alone makes it worth it! Also what about the extended OCI?

If one takes predisposed prejudices out of the equation and one carefully analyze the facts about synthetic oil, the choice is obvious.

The extra mileage vs the extra cost of the syns is negated.

Im sorry I dont understand OCI acroynm???

OCI - Oil Chang Interval. The extended OCI makes the cost of synthetic actually less.

Just curious how often you change your oil?I use synthetic also.
I change mine about every 5k,with new filter of course.

I see point taken. I dont leave any oil in my vehicles longer than 5K so that isnt a selling point for me. Maybe for others yes.

The soonest I change oil is 35k, however, with the bypass filter system that I now run, I may never change the oil.

35K ??? Holy Smokes. Good luck
