Tbars Quick CB Setup for Cheap...

...I thought this would come in handy for those who need to run out and get a basic, quick, setup for cheap...:biggthump

..Again, this is a reliable setup but the key words are Quick, Easy, and Cheap...There are a lot better preferances and setup's but this will work for a fulltime user and is great for the first time setup...:hammer:

..This will include magnet mount antenna's for quick installation and removal for your daily life, for those who do not need a CB all the time..This setup also works well to move it to other vehicles too..

..CB...I have this model in each truck..

...This is the Cobra 19 DX IV which can be found easily, (as well as these antenna's, at wally world, Target, and Radioshack) for $49.99 or on sale for $39.99...I prefer this model as it is basic and simple, made by one of the best Manuf. of CB's, and has one of the loudest speakers I can find in a CB, let alone a compact CB..

19 DX IV Compact CB Radio

"This mobile CB radio offers Instant Channel 9 and 19, RF Gain and an Illuminated LCD Display, all in a compact design!"

..Antenna's...

...This is a good replacement antenna for cheap and is easy to tune without trimming...

..For the last couple of years I have run this antenna on both trucks and due to abuse, heat, and age, I have gone thru two of them...They are a fine antenna and would last alot longer for the casual user...These are found at Radioshack at $32.99...They had been $19-$29 the last few years but have gone up in price..

..Test Trial Antenna...

...I just picked this antenna up for $19.99 and I will be doing a test trial on this..;)

...This antenna has a short whip and is great for low clearance areas...The problem with the short whip is it will shorten the send/receive distance...I thought it would be good to test what kind of trail range I can get out of this at Truckhaven and possibly Big Bear...The good news is, it is made by Cobra and will be a matched setup..

...SWR Meter and testing...

...This section is brief and just an overview. Please refer to your SWR Meter's instructions rather than using this as a guide..:hammer:

...This is a basic SWR meter for testing single antenna's...You can find these for $20 at most electronic stores but if you shop around, I have found them for $10..
cb_swr.jpg

...You must calibrate this each and every time you make an antenna adjustment. You also need to calibrate for each channel test, each and every time...

...You key the mike with the SWR meter in the calibrating mode (See switch position in picture) and you adjust the dial until it is in the set mode as shown below...

Note: Although these 2 pics of meters are of the same meter, the labeling is different but the switch positions are the same...
cb_install_008.jpg

...You then switch the meter to the test setting and key the mike on the channel you are testing...

...How To Set Up this Antenna per Cobra Instructions...

...Antenna Assembly...

...Loosen the set screw from the top of the antenna mast. Insert the whip into the mast until it hits bottom. lightly tighten set screw.

...Antenna Mounting...

...The metal body of your vehicle serves as the ground plane for the antenna. The ideal location for the antenna is on the center of the roof or trunk lid, as far away from any structures like luggage racks as possible. Make sure that all hardware and connections are tightened securely.

...Checking the SWR (Standing Wave Ratio)...

...Make sure your vehicle is in an open area at least 30 feet away from any metal objects and with the doors, hood and trunk closed. Connect an SWR meter in the Coax line between the radio and antenna (Unless your radio has a built in SWR meter). Check the SWR on both channel 1 and channel 40. Readings under 2:1 are considered acceptable, with 1:5:1 or lower being desirable.

Note..
..An SWR reading of over 3:1 on both channel 1 and 40 generally indicates an open or shorted coax or a poor ground connection. Re-check these conditions before proceeding. Do not use the radio until the problem has been corrected. An SWR reading between 2.0 and 3.0 generally indicates a problem with the coax quality or length, or an inadequate ground plane.

..Tuning the Antenna...

A) If the SWR on channel 40 is higher than channel 1:Remove the whip from the mast and trim it by 1/8" to 1/4" using a bolt cutter or hacksaw. Re-insert into the mast, tighten the set screw and again read the SWR. If the SWR reading is still higher than channel 1, repeat until the two channels readings are approximately equal.

B) If the SWR on channel 1 is higher than channel 40: Loosen the set screw, pull the whip up 1/4", tighten the set screw and read the SWR again. If the SWR is still higher than channel 40, repeat until the readings are approximately equal. Then firmly tighten the set screw.

Note:...
...Here are several common causes of "High SWR" readings from Firestick.com 's site...

....Following procedure and my install results...

...I pulled the antenna out of the package and it came with an allen wrench too...Great, this should go quick...Trying to loosen the screw, the allen spun...It seems the screw had a taper in the receiving part...I whipped out my set of allens and then no problem..:dunno:
cb_install_002.jpg

..After placing the antenna in it's future resting spot, setting up my SWR Meter and calibrating it, I was able to start testing...

..Initial test channel 40...

...Initial test channel 1...
cb_install_004.jpg

...After first trimming or two...Since the whip is stainless, I used an air cutoff tool...Using a hacksaw would only get you frustrated and bend the antenna..

...What was you SWR reading when you were tuning it and what was your final reading?

...There are a couple reasons why this would not be a really good antenna mentioned in the first post, but I am curious on your before and after tuning numbers and how much you had to trim...

When I check the SWR with the Cobra antenna it is in the 4 range and my fiberglass hood mount is near one with no tuning. I believe there may be something shorted in this antenna because I have never got it to work. It may just be a defect but Big Lots would not take it back so I have it on my explorer for looks. I have just read several poor reviews on Cobra antennas through the years so I don't know.

They say Wilson is top of the line in antenna's and check out this deal on amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Little-Wil-Wi...TEJUPBN6A4H6&s=generic&qid=1263010796&sr=1-16

...I'm not looking for a Wilson but thank you...

...Am I correct in assuming you did not trim your Cobra antenna???...4 would mean that you definitely have a problem and would probably fry the radio...:dunno:

...Although this thread has some good info on the SWR meter and tuning...

...I will be posting info on tuning this Cobra antenna...;)

..BTW, The Cobra antenna does have a 2 year limited warranty...

^^^^^ I think that link is wrong. takes me right back to this thread.

Link worked just fine for me

ok now its working for me. sorry about that

Yeah I did not trim the antenna. I didn't touch it all and just put it on the roof. I used this antenna on a tractor before and it worked but i never checked the SWR bc it had the Cobra 19 radio in it you talked about earlier. I just figured it was fine.

Do you think the sunroof may affect the ground plane or anything?

Do you think the sunroof may affect the ground plane or anything?

...The sunroof may affect the ground plane depending on where you locate the antenna in relationship to the glass...

...While tuning a mag mount, I like to also test various area locations of the deck plane that I am working on...

...I should probably add here that I am a user and not a techie on cb's...I am a Cobra cb fan and I have had several pick ups with twin truckers on west coast mirrors and I have had a few and I am, a fan of the older K40 mag mounts...

...I'm not sure that I really like the looks of the newer K40 but I will probably have a K30 in the near future to also test here...If I can find one locally and cheap...

..Updated with instructions and pics...;)

Really good update. I learned quite a few things from it. Like you said I am just a user and not a techie. I have never really tuned a antenna. As long as my SWR is below 2 I usually leave it alone. I may tune my antenna now after reading that. I want to get a good mag mount so I can have something in the center of my roof bc I know a hood mount is not the best performance. I have debated between a Little Will or one of those Cobra HG 2000 but have just stuck with what I have now. I found a HG 2000 at a local store for $32 I think.

Anyway great job and thanks for all the info.

Update: Sorry it was a HG 1500 I was looking at. I believe it is one step up from the one you were testing. I am like you I am a fan of Cobra CB's. Not sure how much a matching antenna matters but I say it may make some difference.

...Glad it helped..:biggthump

...You can have a $1000 CB and a $300 antenna set up...If your antenna is not tuned, they are worth nothing..;)

...Wilson and K40 are probably the best Mag Mount antenna's and I am not trying to push anyone toward buying Cobra antenna's...

...What got me started on this was when trying to replace my very easily tuned (no cutting) and pretty reliable Radioshack mag mount antenna, I ran across this Cobra antenna everywhere and for cheap..

...I figured this thread could help others who need or want a quick set up and what they might expect and run into...It never hurts to carry a mag mount as a spare for when you may break or loose a fixed antenna..

..:shifty_ey ...I will be testing other mag mounts in the future and will gladly accept donations of any and all brands of new mag mounts to test here...:biggthump

By the way I belive Sears sells that Cobra CB online for $42.99, and I think it on sale right now even more.

Thats is where I got mine of this model for a spare for the f-150.;)

Tbars is right. Better to have the right antenna for your application; otherwise, it doesn't matter how good your radio works...your signal isn't going anywhere. For 11 meter (CB) antennas, your best signal is going to be with the 102" whip mounted at the rear corner of the vehicle, or a center-loaded (coil in the middle of the short whip) antenna mounted in the center of the roof. Anything else is going to greatly reduce the signal output. And by the way, 99% of Radio Shack antennas are a waste of money. Go to a ham radio supplier and get a Hustler antenna that can be tuned for 10/11 meters. If you're serious about putting out the best signal possible, the Hustler is worth every penny. Lakeview Antennas in Anderson, SC also sells both a reasonably-priced 11-meter mag-mount and a collinear whip. Hope this helps.

setting swrs

It should be said that when you get an swr meter that you must only get a 3 ft piece of coax to link to the CB otherwise you are not getting a true swr reading also there is no real need to check your swrs on channels 1 and 40 you can simply check them on channel 20 instead also for anyone new to CB radios do not do not do not talk on the radio without an antenna connected as this will spike your swrs and burn the finals in your radio and for those interested I used the same radio as a truck driver and it can be peaked and tuned to get the most out of it

...Finally field testing this little Cobra antenna this week end...So far it's done well...:biggthump

Just wondering how that little antenna worked out for you Tbars? I started reading this thread a few months back when I had no idea what I was getting into. Now I have a Cobra 29 ltd BT, peaked and tuned, with a roof mounted Wilson 5000. I started with the mag mounted Hustler 32" and I gotta say, for just talking a mile or two, it wasn't bad! It would be great for those short trails and talking between yourselves in a convoy, but, just like the Ex bug, C.B.'s can make you sick... seriously sick. Now I'm getting the RFX-75 finals upgrade and a 500 watt linear. And it probably wont stop there. The difference between the Hustler mag mount and the Wilson 5000 is night and day. After my peak and tune, I was hitting a good 2 miles, well heard with the Hustler. The next day, I got the Wilson 5000 and installed it and I was hitting about 8-9 miles before fading! The Wilson has a stainless 62" that it comes with and also a weather cap for covering the antennas threads when removal is necessary. I just wish I had done a little more research before making my purchases. Gotta start somewhere I guess! I will let you know how the linear and finals turn out after Truckhaven, as I am saving for the trip right now and don't have change to spare! Sorry about my diarrhea of the fingers.:salute:

...The little Cobra antenna has served me well for the purposes stated in this thread and I really like the low profile as my Ranger is always going under low overhangs..:biggthump

..The only issue I have with it is referring it to new users who do not know how to trim an antenna...I am currently looking for another antenna or two but finding "Cheap and Quick" antenna's are getting harder to find...

..I can not even find a "Lil Wil" antenna locally...:(

i an heading over to BTF right now and then the truckstop..;)..And Harley is going lizard hunting...:p:
