I have replaced the timing gasket, water pump gaskets and a new timing cover. The timing and chain did not need to be replaced. Thus, I have finished cleaning and have put back the timing cover and water pump. I put RTV sealant on the timing cover and let it set for 24 hrs. I’m now setting the 5.0 liter engine to TDC, cylinder #1 on compression stroke. I discovered the reference tab on the damper, but what number do I set the crankshaft at? Thanks.

TDC Marks on Crankshaft Clockwise or Counter Clockwise

I am curious as to turn the crankshaft (97 5.0 liter) clockwise or counter clockwise to set the timing indicator. What number do I set the no. 1 cylinder on the compression stroke. Thanks

Clockwise past "0" then back to "0" is how I do it. The engine runs clockwise when viewed from the front. Going past 0 by about 15 degrees then back counter clockwise to 0 will take any timing chain slack out.

Use a pencil in the spark plug bore to verify the timing marks on the balancer are indeed accurate. My balancer had " shifted"

Pencil in Spark Plug Bore for Timing Marks

Thanks for the response. But please clarify utilizing the pencil in the spark plug bore. Do I unplug spark plug #1 and put the pencil into the bore? Then do I go past 0 about 15 degrees then back counter clockwise to 0 to take out slack? Will the pencil break? Help me with this. Thanks for your help and patience. Don't want to hire a mechanic yet. Thanks

The amount of pencil sticking out the hole will be greatest when the piston is at TDC

once you verify the "true" TDC, go compare this with the indicated timing on the balancer

You also must be sure it is at TDC of the compression stroke. Some people overlook, or, misunderstand this.
