I have had computers turn off check engine lights after a successfull test, but most of them are newer vehicles or had to do with the evap system on our cars (like the gas cap will throw a light and after tightening it the CEL will eventually go out).

I know from experience you can get our cars state inspection ready within 3-5 miles of driving one trip approx. 50 - 60 mph with a constant light gas pedal.

So if you are going to clear the check engine light, those initial computer tests will have to be performed before the computer will test the egr. Then, its a waiting game.

Frankly, not surprised.
Well, after all the planning, the road trip is off until Wednesday/Thursday, but I'll clear the code and hang on. Any specific suggestions as to driving cycle? In any event, I'll just press on and hope for no light.

As ever, thank you. I'll post when there's news...

An egr light is not going to stop a road trip

If the code comes back I suspect a faulty dpfe

Thanks. After posting yesterday, I cleared the code. It came back on. This was pretty much with some normal city driving.
I cleared it again at the end of the day yesterday. Today I drove 115 miles - minimal city, 80 highway, 33 mountain. Spent the day at altitude, and then came back.
As of this writing, no Check Engine light; fingers crossed. My really only concern is smog test when the time comes.

Anyhow, to all, again, thank you.

so much for that: light came back, I cleared the codes, came back the next day. Maybe I'll have it tested at 7000. Would that matter? It made the 220-mile roundtrip just fine before the light came on.
