I've been debating aftermarket vs. custom catback systems. I think I'm going to go aftermarket b/c it seems easier and I don't have to worry about a mechanic screwing up.
The question is what should I get??? Flowmaster Force II? Dynomax??
What do yall have? Is it too loud (I don't want too loud)? Do you notice a difference?
Ultimately I want a nice rumble but not too loud. Plus I want to notice a difference. What is the point of increased horsepower if I can't feel it.
So tell me what yall have! Thanks

I had a Flowie on my '92 Sport that I got from Dead Link Removed . It ran about $160 and took 2 hours to install in my garage. Worth every penny!!! Had a nice rumble at wot, but under daily driving wasn't really loud. Flowmaster claims about a 10% increase in hp and torque on the 4.0 Explorer, and I would have to agree with them after installing it.

I am not running cats, so I can not tell you how my system sounds or would sound, BUT, I am running Dynomax Super Turbos and I have heard systems using Flow Masters.

My opinion: Flow Masters on a six do not sound as good as Dynomax Turbos.
the Dynomax are mellower and not as load at an idle.

I run a 5.0L into dual Dynomax and they sound great.

:chug: then decide.

I have a 92 xlt, and i just went to a local shop bought a FLOWMASTER NON DELTA 40 SERIES....for i think around $65, took it to a local shop, and they charged me 60 to take off the old muffer and tail pipe....install the flowmaster, and bend new 2.25 inch pipe.

Over all, i like the sound...lets you know its there, Very noticable power increase also. Others say its loud...but i would say its loud BUT COULD be just a tad bit louder.....but if you start ur truck in ur drive way and go in ur house...you'll probably be able to hear its rumble from inside your house....*depending on where u are in your driveway*

goodluck on deciding.

later,
ryan

custom all the way

When would you rather find a problem? After market if you find some thing wrong or missing your in for the duration and eating the shipping costs. And i bet you can get pretty close to an installed custom system for what its gonna cost you to buy the aftermarket system. And you get a warrantee in you city not where it was manufatured. Exhaust works off very simple rules and any shop worth there beans shouldn't mind you watching your investment, some thing you can't so with after market. If a aftermarket muffler brakes, you have to remove it , send it to them, and then have the new one installed. All at your cost not theres. If you use a local shop its warranteed at home.

I use a Gibson cat back and I love it. Good low sound little more power have had it on there for almost 3 years in Alaska so it has seen its share of snow and such. No problems and you can do it yourself. The only warning that I can give you about local shops is that they usually do not use madrel bent tubing so your custom exhuast's performance will suffer regardless of what size tubing they use. But I like the idea of buying local.

I vote for Custom Borla Catback, those are sweet! I have one and i love it!

I think I got one of them custom exhaust thingys ;) I've got a dynomax super muffler thing... I believe... it was there when I bought it... my 94 that is... it sounds a lil louder than stock

i just installed a dynomax superturbo cback system (#17415) from www.summitracing.com 2 weeks ago, and i like it.
sounds almost stock except when you hammer it - then it yells, a sporty throaty sound (not ricey - just sporty), i also installed the kkm air cleaner, between the 2 i feel a pretty good difference, 0-60 maybe 10% better, roll-on power 50-90 is like night and day, i looked around quite a bit also and i came to the conclusion that i prefered a systems that was designed specifically for my x, and after reading some tech stuff that i won't pretend to understand (cfm ratings? - stk=225cfm, flowmaster force II=350cfm, dynomax=410cfm) it seemed like a good choice, and it was cheap $104 delivered + spring bolts and o-ring gasket appx $25, i paid someone to put it in $50 - but only cause it was 15*F outside when it arrived and i was jonezin to get it installed

I have a dual in/dual out flowmaster 50 series SUV muffler with custom bent dual pipes and 3" stainless, slash cut tips. Sounds very nice and turns heads too. I should be getting some pics up as soon as it's warm enough for me to wash it.

I've heard a lot of people mention the flowmaster non-delta 40 muffler, and i cannot find the exact muffler people are talking about on www.summitracing.com , there are 4 different flowmaster 40's but non of them say anything about " non-delta"??? also, is this flowmaster 40 nd really loud? i want something that sounds like a sports car when you accelorate fast, but not really loud when idliling or barley accelorating. something like the "dynomax superturbo cback system" TSTONE speaks of in his post. any suggestions or helpfull advice would be appreciated.

I used a Borla (all stainless) cat-back. I had the shop cut of the Borla "turbo-swirl" tip that stuck striaght out below the bumper, and slash cut and bend a piece of 2 1/2 stainless to look like the stock pipe. It's very stealth, unless you're looking.
The sound is perfect, like a quieter Mustang 5.0, and it does not embarass me when I take my parents or in laws out to dinner.....

I had flowmaster 50 delta cat back installed(2.25 in, 2.50 out) exit just below bumper w/chrome tip. The interior sound is AWESOME!, but not TOO loud. At idle, ext sound is KILLER! I was afraid to go with 40 series, thought it might be a tad too loud.

yo black crowe, what is the exact number that you got from summitracing.com there are so many to choose from. do you know which ones would work for a 92 expl?
is the Flomaster 50 delta add noticable hp and tourque, and does it sound like a race-car when accelorating or like a truck? thanks for the help.

loanshark

I ordered mine through local performance shop then had muffler shop inst it. Any of them should work on your 92 and im pretty sure 2 1/2 pipe is as big as you can go as far as clearence(the guy that did mine said it was a ***** bending it), and what ive heard not good to go larger anyway. Yea i definately noticed increase in horsepower, not great but did notice. As far as sound when accelerating, sounds like a truck not race car, definately NOT like a rice burner. 50s really not loud, but you still notice it, especially at idle. And int sound is perfect(my opinion) kind of a low muffled rumble, really sweet!! flowmaster.com lets you hear what each one sounds like at idle, accel, drive by. Anyway dude, hope that helps.

Borla is the bomb

I have borla on my truck and it is a great combination of sound and made a huge difference in my low end torque. I had the cat off of the truck for awhile and it was too loud at freeway speeds for long distances. I put it back on and barely noticed any difference in power but it was easy to live with again. Throaty and somewhat deep. You can't hear it at all at idle. But definatly noticable at WOT and tolerable/enjoyable at 2500 to 3000 RPM

I had Dynomax Ultra Flows on my 87 Mustang 5.0. These are much louder than my Borla is on the Ex. In relation to Mustangs the Flowmaster Delta Force is even louder than the Dynomax. I could just barely live with Dynomax. Harmonics were very apparent at 2200 RPM. I don't get any harmonics with the Borla

My Ranger will get Gibson Stainless Steel as soon as the current pipe breaks. This will be soon. I would put Borla on again but for my particular year and body the Borla is almost $400 and the Gibson is $300 and I want that great big 3" tail they have.

The Borla hasn't rusted at all in 4 yrs of salty roads. It cost around $300 when I bought it.

The Warrior shackles protect the pipe a little but the rear exit takes a beating off road compared to side exit models. Something to consider.

Thanks black crowe, your info was really helpful. Greatly appreciated. peace

Flowmaster

Get the flowmaster Force II. That's what I have, and with the KKM intake it sounds awesome. Even before the KKM it sounded good, but what ever system you get, Add a KKM or K&N Filter Charger they are well worth the money and make any X soun alot better.
