I'm not sure, but having turned an odo back (mileage excempt on title and I wanted to try lol) I can tell you it's not worth the effort. Takes a long time

I assume you're talking an analog odometer and not a digital one. One way to tell is that the numbers won't be centered in the "window", that or they won't line up in straight line.

I don't know of any "marks" that would appear that weren't there the first time through.

Virtually all odo's since the 80's can show 999,999 miles. Thats a lot of miles. The car should look like it if its over 1,000,000 miles. Also, most odos will will look like crooked teeth if they've been spun back.

I think the 93 and earlier odometers are 100 k units

I have read on this forum before about a real fine scratch around either the first , or the 10ths digit wheel if it has turned over, and another line next to it, if it has turned over twice. You need a magnifier to see it.

yep. Also most ford trucks pre 94

Actually, I have a '92x with 326000+ km and can state that the odometers do go over 1000000k

Actually, some do and some don't. my 93 xlt was a 100k unit.

I stand corrected. That seems quite asinine to me, having two different odometers. I guess they must have had a reason.

The last time I saw a 100k odometer was on my '65 Electra.

It's possible that the odometers registering kilometers could be different.
My '91 Ranger could be different than the Explorers, but it has a 100K(mph) odo. It shows 43,x.. miles and has turned over only one time (143,x.. miles), which I verified by records furnished by the two previous owners.
The only marks on it is a fine line about 1/16 inch inboard of the left side of EACH ONE of the numbers.

From everything I know about these odometers, the 6 digit odometer (to include a 1 in front of 5 zeros not counting the white tenths mark) was first available in mid 1993 for the US. I believe non US spec have the 6 digit availability (don't quote me on that, because I'm not 100%)

Ford really didn't put the manual (non digital) 6 digit odometers in everything until the 94 model year, with some exceptions like the mid 93 X. I had a 94 ranger that had a 5 digit. I know that when the ranger received a new dash in 95 it was a 6 digit.

Now the real teaser: the 91-94 Mazda Navajo HAS 6 digit odometers, I guess because it says "mazda?"

I installed a 6 digit speedometer/ odometer in my 92. It has worked perfect for the last 3 years. I reset it to match the 5 digit reading at the time which was 97xxx (197xxx) as verified through registration records. I think when I picked it from the junkyard it read 212xxx, it now reads 233xxx and has never missed a beat.
