96 explorer xlt
3 years ago when I bought my 96 x my temp gauge didn't work. So, I went to the parts house and got a new sending unit. No go. So I went back and checked the price of a new gauge. OUTRAGEOUS price. So I went to the junk yard and took home a whole new set of gauges for 75 bucks. No go. So I put a old type 20 dollar gauge in the console below radio. Reading some of the other threads on the subject I think I might have some options. Is the gauge supposed to go up if I ground the connection? Is there more than one sending unit? I replaced the one on the thermostat with 1 wire.
Are there any other things I'm missing? Other than being electrically stupid. And getting lucky buying a x with a non-working temp gauge!

Thanks very much

I have a 95 xlt that has a possesed temp gauge. The sending unit for it is a one wire unit that if it is grounded should go all the way to the top. If you have already replaced the sending unit and the gauge with no sucess try running a new wire. I have read some posts that say the wire has a tendancy to break. Just a note, the gauges are notorious for failure, you might have two bad ones. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance at the wire to troubleshoot. Good Luck...
