Terrible Shifting

well, I seem to have lost the 2-3 shift... won't shift past second. After my dad replaced the TPS earlier today (while I was at work), he took it for a spin, and it shifted 1-4 fine.. just not O/D.
now it won't shift into 3, or 4... I'm at a loss.. What is the possibility of it being the Transmission Range Sensor? And is there anyway to test it?
how about re-adjusting the kickdown cable?

another update... decided to drive my truck into town to pick up the TRS/Neutral Safety Switch.
Something I noticed.... it *looks* like my truck is shifting into 3rd, but is just slipping, so it shifts back down to 2nd. I was goin about 45mph, running at just over 3k RPM.
when I let off the gas, the RPMs seemed to fairly quickly drop down to about 1000, and in about 1-2 second intervals, the RPM would jump to 1500, then back down to 1000, while I was coasting.
Putting it in 2nd gear, it did not do that.
Also, wether or not this is related (probably not), wether in D or 2, when I pushed farther down on the gas pedal, I heard this very high-pitched whine. It was only in a certain section of the throttle.. if I pushed farther down, it went away.. if I let off, it went away.

Gonna go replace the TRS now, and see what happens.

well that didn't make a difference...
and I got ahold of a tranny shop around here... $1750 for the rebuild.. includes removing/reinstalling it from/to the vehicle, replacing an output shaft, a shift kit, along with anything else that needs replaced... and a new torque converter. Plus, only a 2-day turn around time.
they also said it's been fairly common (to them) to get a "neutral condition" with the 4R70W transmission. But this will only be the 2nd V8 Explorer they've done.
Looks like I needs to get me a loan so I can get this done ASAP.

If your going to have the trans rebuilt, here's some good advise. When looking for a good trans shop ask them if they check there rebuilt trans with air pressure or on a dyno. If they say by air pressure turn around and walk away. Then go find one that puts the trans on a dyno. I say this because if checked by air there is an extremley high chance of trans failure in the near future. When checked on a dyno it is driven through all the gears for a least 45-60 minutes under different loads.

I'll definately ask 'em... but I was referred to the shop by a few people that said they do great work.

hey Gavin what was the end result?

roasted bands
pistons were shot
*possibly* broken mid-shaft or somethin like that.. can't remember exactly, it's been a while lol

not too fond of that shop, even tho they supposedly did great work. They did fast work, but I don't respect them. 1.5 day turn-around time.
Got the truck home, puking ATF like mad. Called up the shop, told 'em it was leaking really bad. They say "oh yeah, I forgot to tell you it might leak around the drain plug..." BS, my pan was leaking.. So I say it's not the drain plug, it's leaking all around the pan seal. "Oh yeah, it might leak there too, because the bolts you got with your aftermarket pan aren't the right size." TOTAL BS as it has NEVER leaked on me ONCE in the 2yrs I've had the aftermarket pan.
Plus, come to find out, they did NOT re-use the RE-USABLE gasket.. instead they used one of those cheap thin-ass POS gaskets you'd get with a new filter.
Then, as I'm going to replace that, guess what? That damn pan MUST be siliconed on, too. I beat the hell out of the pan with a rubber mallet and it DOES NOT come off.
Needless to say, it went back like it was.. But after tightening up the bolts better, it no long leaks.

that's the brunt of the story, anyway.

Need help . Have the same truck. Hard shifting thru all gears not all the time. Burnt smell. Replaced transmission and wouldn't have guessed it. Same issue. Truck still moves. I am about to get rid of it. Any suggestions? Cooler and lines are clear. Transmission still runs hot. Nobody can tell me why though its our only vehicle to get her and I to work and kids to school.
