Texans to The Slabs Jan 27th,28th...Now with Link of writeup from 4wheelparts

Rod good call my man! Thats a good idea. I will be taking my sway bars off when we get to the slabs. I know Geralds are always off, but is anyone else going to do this?

You dont have any kind of quick disconnects do you? I am just taking my tools and will just unbolt them! Is this what you do?

Rod are you heading to the Slabs this weekend to scope it out or you think it's fine. I just saw Jay's pictures and a lifted YJ had a lot of problems getting across last weekend so with the rain this week thought it would be even higher.

I doubt that I will go out there this weekend. If the weather holds like it is, it will be fine, but if we do get some rain, that would spell trouble.
Whats the URL with Jays rig at the Slabs last weekend?

All I know is we better not get the showers that they are predicting on friday! Pray people Pray! My fingers are crossed.

Here are a couple (bad) photos that I took real quickly. These are some things I have done in preperation for the slabs run. Better pics later.

Grrr......

I can see this coming a week away. I won't be able to make this one. Too much is going to get in the way. The first two aren't deal killers but take some of the fun out of coming:
1) I have managed to break my arm - hairline fracture, it's hard to drive and do several things.
2) Didn't get the Powertrax in yet.

But either of these next two reasons will keep me here for sure:
3) I am an accountant and I will HAVE to work next weekend - I won't be able to get all of the yearend close and tax issues completed by the deadline of Jan 31st without it. I have tried to get everything done - this is the main reason I wanted you guys to wait another week, to give me a chance at finishing yearend procedures, but I just won't be able to get it all behind me by the weekend.
4) I have a whistling sound in my right front. I am afraid I am about to need an axle hub/bearing assembly replaced. I am d@m# sure not going on a 500 mile trip and dunking it in river water all weekend; I'll be asking to get trailored home.

Fate isn't with me on this run guys. Have fun and I will hit the next one.

whistle sound ?

I was considering going on the run to the slabs. I also have a whistling sound coming from my left front wheel. It's been there for a while, I thought it was the warning mec. on my brakes. Had them replaced but a couple of days later the sound returned. The pitch of the whistle seems to fluctuate with the speed of the wheel and it's very annoying its so damn loud. If it is a bearing you suggest it stays out of the water? Fix asap?

just noticed on a post, don't have tow hooks, I guess this is a problem?

Where is El Arroyo's?

The weather does not look so good guys. cause there is still a chance of Scattered showers.

Rod or Keith, Do you know how high the water is other there.

I think everyone should just plan on going until we actually see the rain. I dont think that the river will be to deep as of now. If we get some sprinkles then I think we can still make it out there and just not go through some of the big obstacles. We can have some fun on the way to the camp location and play around that area and still have a ball. Cross your fingers for no rain!

Re: whistle sound ?

Guys some of you know how easy I am. Hehe.. don't give up on me yet. I'll still try to make it if I can work out a few things. It is supposed to get in the mid to upper fifties Tuesday and if so I may install my locker then. Work, well.... I am still "working" on that. I am concerned about the water levels and wish we could get some definitive input on that. I have no desire to mimic Sinjin and it would be a shame to take a 500 mile round trip to find myself staring at river crossings I cannot ford, knowwhatImean?

Jeff, I got help and got my whistle to stop; it wasn't the bearings, but the axle seal. I do not know if that is your problem or not, but water shouldn't hurt as long as it is not bearings.

YES. Here is an entry from my registry (click on "Gerald's Truck" to read all that stuff):
--------------------------------
"Trail Equipment
If you have not gone on a run yet, this article is written to prepare you to prepare for it. The opinions in the article are not soley mine. That article is the result of much correspondence with many experienced fourwheelers and most of the points and suggestions are the result of experience learned the hard way. Heed its advice before you show up for a run. Here is the link if you have not bothered to access it yet from the main page."
Trail Equipment
---------------------------

Anytime you show up for a run without taking the trouble to equip yourself with ANY of the "Required Items" you put yourself in the position of ruining the rest of the group's trip when you have to be nursemaided through a situation that you should have been prepared for in the first place.

You don't have towhooks and plan on attending a run comprised of dozens of river crossings. If (when) you get stuck, the only rear towpoint we can get you out with will be to use a "D" clevis bolted through your bumper hitch hole and run a towstrap through it. Pulling out a 2 1/2 ton vehicle via the bumper oftentimes results in the bumper snapping off the body and becoming a lethal projectile, careening into the vehicle doing the towing. A J**per in Dallas very nearly got killed and spent months in intensive care when the bumper of the person he was strapping broke its welds and catapulted directly into him.

Everything on that "Required List" was put on there for a VERY good reason. Do not show up without equipping yourself. Thanks!

Lets keep positive weather attitudes, guys. I'm for sure there no matter what because I've been dying to get this truck in the dirt for the last two weeks. Gerald, I really hope that you are able to work things out so that you can go. I'm sure that you could still do plenty with a broken arm. I'm also going to second everything Gerald said above. I am nowhere near being an old fart either, but I have witnessed flying broken straps, adn I can imagine the damage that could be done by a bumper attached to it.

I think that we are going to be okay on the water level. That is a big river and the level will drop fast if it does rain any this week.

I need to ask this of everyone going. Does anyone have a strong fear/dislike of dogs. I was planning on bringing mine if noone has any objections. She can be a little in your face at times, but is generally well behaved. So speak up now, so that I can make arrangements for someone to keep her if anyone has a problem.

I think if we get any rain we are gonna have to call it off. I spoke to some guys that went out there this week and well, they came back with a hydrolocked motor and another vehicle whos tranny caught on fire. Needless to say they went out there at 2am, drunk off there ass. So I'm sure they werent really picking the best lines. And no they werent any of the guys that were out there with us before. The water levels right now acording to some other people that I talked to is very doable, but ANY rain could spell disaster. Possible to change the venue? I know there is Shiloh Ridge, http://www.shilohridge.com ,But that may be to far for the SA guys. Just an idea.
Gerald, I hope you can make it and totally agree with you on the Trail Equipment.
Michael, I have a huge fear of big dogs due to an incident that I had when I was young.
Well everybody keep your fingers crossed!!

Gerald, Well said. I for one have now read the trail equip. that you wrote like a bible now.

Micheal, I am Not a big fan of dogs either but I should be fine if you want to bring her.

On the Weather if it is Raining I am Not camping but it depends on how I am Feeling if I camp too. I am bringing a tent in case I want to.

I am up for either place it would be quicker for any of the dallas guys to get to Shiloh and I know the place fairly well. If it does rain Shiloh will still be doable because of the sandy east texas soil.I know how to get there also so people can caravan with me.

These are all mostly simple problems. I love dogs; last year's Colorado run was the last for my longtime friend Scamp. If yours is decently behaved it should be able to maintain distance from those who are not able to "meet" it. By golly if your dog is your buddy then he/she should be a welcome guest. Tents and other issues are not a problem either; we can camp in our own vehicles if the weather gets bad.

HOWEVER, It's only the water level that worries me. I will not hydrolock my '99 simply to go on a weekend run.
