2002 explorer
Hello my name is Chris
I just bought a 2002 v6 4door 4x4 explorer with 183000 miles
I am thinking and was told that most of those miles were freeway
I had a 1991 jeep Cherokee inline 6 4x4 was a great simple truck but my bad luck when I used it in the Baja where a temps are 95 to 103 degrees it ran hot. I babied it for a few years but last summer while driving on the beach it overheated big time black smoke wind came up flames started it burned to the ground.
So I have my 2002 which will be used in the same condition driving on bad dirt roads and on the beach in 4x4 95 to 103 degree temps.
Any helpful hints to make it last
I did just find that one rear strut spring broken up near top
Can I leave it?
Or replace with aftermarket as I have read that those springs break more than they should I

Thanks for your time and input
chris

Stock 2002 - 2005 Explorers

Both my rear springs were broken & my front struts were leaking when I bought my Ex in Feb 2010.

Now I'm running the StrutTEK's on all four corners and have nothing but good things to say about them! The ride is awesome and the price is right. I can't compare them to the original struts since they were FUBAR when I bought my Ex.

The rears were installed on 11/29/2010 & the fronts were installed on 2/20/2012.

I love them. The ride is great.

I'm not going to review all the threads he sent you, but living here in az, we have some experience with heat (103 is a cool day in the summer).

First put in an extra tranny cooler, and a tranny temp gauge. You think your engine runs hot? You should see the trans. And heat kills a trans quick.

Second, I installed an electric fan with a relay from the ac clutch, so that whenever the ac runs, the fan blows extra air over the condensor and radiator. Good for staying cool when moving slow or stopped.

Finally (but maybe firstly) do a full cooling system service. Replace all hoses, flush the bejesus out of it, and replace your radiator cap at the minimum. To be even more prepared, I'd say find a larger than stock capacity radiator. I have one from Performance Radiator in mine and I am very happy with it.

If you're already that deep in, might want to change the water pump just in case.

Good thing you didn't.

All the links pertain to the StrutTEK's & not the intense heat. :fire:

Well good! At least we weren't being redundant! lol

Welcome to this forum! My van was running a little hotter than usual during the summer. My coolant looked pretty dirty. I replaced the coolant, and the temperature was back to normal again. You might want to install a new thermostat before you replace the coolant. They sometimes get out of spec if they are very old.
