What kind of horsepower gains do you think can be realized by modifying an Explorer V6 SOHC for each of the following:

1- KKM or KN filter kit
2- headers
3- cat back exhaust
4- HP MAF
5- throttle body
6- synthetic fluids
7- chip
Other items?????????

Thanks in advance….

Considering that there are no headers or TB's for the SOHC that I know of, I'm going to take those out of the equation. Also, since you wont have the TB or headers, I'll take the MAS out of the lineup because it won't do anything (IMO). Therefore with the KKM, catback, fluids, and chip > I'd guess about 225 at the flywheel, maybe 230 very optimistically.

i would have to disagree with Alec, no offense
i have a 98 SOHC, and have a modified airbox with a K&N drop in

these HP gains are ESTIMATES, if anyone (other than Alec ;)) would like to say otherwise, please do

K&N filter set-up like mine 3-10 HP
Cat back, assuming you have dual cats like mine 10-20
Throttle Body Spacer Claims 5-15 HP
SuperChip (superchips.com) Claims 25 HP

THESE ARE JUST GUESSES! I AM NOT A PRO

There are many things to do to get some HP, Troll has 478 i think now, but he has a supercharger and a bottle, however he does not have an SOHC

keep in mind the SOHC has 205 HP stock

hope i helped.......

Hey MONOCHROMOUS,

Does the throttle body spacer really work? Where and how much did you buy it for? Thanks

What is the purpose of a TB spacer?
Thanks....

i dont have one myself, but heres a link all about them:
Dead Link Removed

let me know if that link doesnt work, its at macromotive.com

I almost forgot:
Ignition
Plugs
Wires

ignition mods wont give you much with a new engine such as the 99 SOHC. Performance gains would be negligable, maybe 1-2 hp. Mileage would probably go up 1 or 2, though.

i just put in Bosch Premium Wires and Platinum +4s ill let you guys know the differences i notice, i havent used a ful tank yet...

which yields more horsepower...a 66mm throttle body, or the TB spacer? also, can you get a performance TB such as BBK and get a spacer as well?

not sure on that one, start a new thread somewhere so someone who knows can answer ;)

The actual larger TB will yield more gains due to the larger aperature. Yes, you can use a spacer and an aftermarket throttle body. The spacer makes power by increasing the volume of the intake plenum and somehow increasing the volume of the intake charge.

Do you have any data to prove these assertions? If not, what do youy base them on?

alec, do you think it would be difficult to MAKE a spacer?? what would i have to risk?

Synthetic fluids could get you another 1-5 HP.

I witnessed a dyno test with a 99 Vette with Mobil 1 and we saw an increase of 3 HP and 4 lb/ft torque when AMSOIL motor oil was installed. Synthetic ATF and gear lube will help. You may also see an increase in MPG.

As for ignition mods, most the feedback I've seen about them has been on this site. In general, the aftermarket ignition systems don't do that much as the Explorer already has a good ignition system. As for plugs and wires, in general older trucks see more of a gain than younger, well running engines. IMO, if a spark plug is pretty new, it's doing a pretty good job compared to older plugs > age matters. Also, unless your plug wires are really old or damaged, new wires probably won't do much.

Yes, you should be able to make a TB spacer. I don't think it would hurt anything, and might help. Just make sure its strong enough, that you have no leaks (use good gaskets), and it doesn't interfere with any other components.

First, I can't imagine a throttle body spacer giving any HP improvements. To what benefit would it be? We have fuel injected motors. So making the distance between the throttle body and the combustion chamber doesn't seam to make sense! Just my 2 cents.

It is not a correct assumption to think you can add the different Hp ratings for each after market component you installed together and come to a total HP increase. Each manufactures estimates are HP gains on a stock motor given ideal conditions. One might assume that all the mods listed above would yield 43 to 70 HP gains. Experience says this will not happen. The reason the SOHC produces 205 HP is because it is very efficient. Without installing "power adders" such as turbochargers, superchargers, nitro, or other such things, all you achieve with filters, chips and exhaust is the freeing up of HP. To assume one could "free up" 20 to 35% more HP with those mods is extremely optimistic.

I would take an educated guess and say that Alec's guess of 10% to 12% HP free up is fairly accurate. Only a dyno will tell.

Troll has a stroked V-8 to nearly 350 cubes with a very large supercharger and all high performance internals. He has invested many thousands of dollars. Not even in the same arena as a relatively stock SOHC V-6.

Anyways, just my two cents.
