97 Reg Cab Ranger
I'm getting a new vehicle sometime this summer, and I'm thinking about an Explorer. Most likely a 97-99. I'm getting rid of this small-ass Ranger and getting some more room and power. I just wanted to see what you guys think of your Xplorers.. how the 4.0 performs.. and any praises or complaints you have about them in general. I'm most likely turning into a pimpmobile.. my currents 10s, 2 15s, TV with Xbox, small drop, etc.

the 4.0 sohc is FAST! faster than the v8, you'll love it. Good choice for a car! LOL. Anyways I have the ohv, and i mean its underpowered but not horrible, i love driving it. I wish i could get some more power tho after driving a sohc around.

My SOHC is great, never underpowered and it pretty dang realiable.

I have a 99 and have no big complaints. I'm a big guy so I wish the seats moved back a little more. I guess thats what I get for buying a sport.

If you were to look at the SOHC V-6 I would only buy a 2000 model year or newer. if you want a 97-99 I would say get a 98 or 99 and get the AWD V-8 for the ultimate pimpmodile. the 98 had some new features introduced, a new rear hatch, and the 99 had a new front bumper added. Thats just my opinion. My 95 XLT is a great truck, but if I did it again, it'd be a 99 AWD V-8 Eddie Bauer

Like mine

We recently bought our 2000 V8 AWD Eddie Bauer. No complaints, love the V8, great torque, but I think you can do better on the gas mileage with the V8 4WD (not full time AWD).

I now have a 2001 Eddie Bauer V-8 AWD and I think the gas milage is great for a V-8. i get 17-18 city, 20-21 highway. Thats better then my old 95 did and that thing was the V-6 in 2WD setting.

not really, only the sohc sport with 4.10 gears can keep up with a 5.0 2wd Ex/Mounty. Almost all of you guys on here with the sohc are posting track times in the 16.5 or more range, I can run consistant 16.2 in the 5.0 Mounty and 0-60 in 8 seconds, all the times I can find for the Sport are around 8.4 even. And out of all the people I know with sohc Explorers only my friends Sport with 4.10 gears can keep up, 4 drs can't, not that there slow or anything. the sohc has good pull on the highway.
Plus people are still haveing problems with it, and a lot of people on here are getting crappier mileage than the 5.0 guys. Ours gets 15-16 city and 20-22 highway at about 80mph, and I drive hard in the city.

Bumpin97Ranger - I would definitley get a 5.0 Explorer/Mounty. If you don't want the Eddie Bauer version (or care for it's pudgy looks), save some money and find a 2001 5.0 XLT with the sport package, they look very clean and smooth with that option, looks like an Eddie Bauer but w/o the tacky cladding.

The 2001 XLT Sport does have the same cladding as the Eddie bauer...it's just painted grey....

The XLS has the painted plane cladding. The XLT with the sport package has less pudgy cladding that has a smooth gloss finish to it, a friend at school has that package on his XLT, there was another thread about this, the guys on here with XLT's and sport package have the glossy smooth finish cladding that isn't overdone like the Eddie Bauer.

The XLS cladding is just grey plastic from the ones I've seen, the XLT Sport has grey clearocated flares that are the same as the eddie ones except grey and the eddie had tan cleacoated flares. They both stick out just as much as th eother. The XLS does not stick out as much as either of th eothers.

Check it out for yourself. These are all year 2000 trucks
