I purchased two Hankook Dynapro ATM for my Explorer(rear) yesterday from my local tire shop. Well shortly after getting them placed on, I went on the highway. Going at speeds of 60-70mph. After a while I notice a thudding when applying brakes at 60-70 mph and also when taking foot off gas (without braking).

I don't want to take it back to the shop because I don't want to seem like a pain and who knows the problem might not be because of them but it does seem kind of strange that the problem started right after they installed the tires.

It does do it went going at speeds of 20-30(other low speeds) mphs

If you have 4wd it could be the auto 4x4 detecting a difference in tire rotation speed between the front and rear tires. This may be due to the fact that you replaced the rear tires only and the diameter of the tires in the rear is different enough from the ones up front to cause the auto 4x4 to think that there is tire slippage when there isn't any, and the transfer case is engaging the front drive axle.

To solve it, buy two more tires of the same brand, model, and size for the front (what I recommend). Or, do a search for "brown wire mod" in the 2002-2005 forums to find out how to disable the auto 4x4 when you are on the road...it will allow you to enable it with the flip of a switch when you need 4wd.

Just to be sure, check and make sure the tire shop torqued your lug nuts properly on the two wheels that rec'd the new tires, but I'm thinking the noise you hear is the "auto 4x4 system kicking in", because you installed only 2 new tires instead of all 4 getting changed. Even if you installed 2 new tires of the same size as the 2 older tires on the vehicle, the tread depth is most likely different between the old and new tires and this will cause the auto 4x4 to kick in. If you have the auto 4x4 system, you will need to buy the other 2 tires or remove fuses #17 and #18 to disable the auto 4x4 system until you get get the other new tires installed.

Thanks Ronin8002 & Exproblems.

I believe I would need two new tires to match. Before I order the two new tires for the front I have a question. According to the dealer Ford installed these metal caps on the tires and one of them became stuck. In order to remove it it will most likely mess up the pressure sensor and I would need to get a new one. Do the pressure sensor have to be motorcraft? Will it affect the other three sensors? How would this all work out? Dealer want almost $700 for the 2 hankook tires (install, mount, and etc), sensor and install of sensor.

unfortunately my premium esp won't cover the pressure sensor i don't believe.

The previous owner of my Explorer got rid of the factory Explorer rims and put Lincoln Navigator rims on my vehicle and he never re-installed the TPM sensors into the Lincoln rims. I never bothered to install them either, don't need or want them at all and it would cost too much money to have them installed at this point as well. So I don't know what kind of "metal cap" you are referring to that is stuck according to the Ford dealer you went to. I would take the vehicle to a local repair shop you trust for a second opinion on that metal cap damaging the TPM sensor during tire removal from the rim. I don't trust dealerships as a rule of thumb. Don't know if the TPM sensors need to be Motorcraft or not, but I remember talking to a mechanic about them 2 years ago(he made a comment to me that mine weren't working) and he mentioned that he had heard they were suppose to be coming out with aftermarket TPM sensors and they would be cheaper than factory ones. Something to look into. I don't know what 2 Hankook tires run for on an Explorer, figure $360-$400 for 2, so it looks like the Ford dealer is whacking you $300 for 1 TPM sensor. It sounds high for something that they can install very easily since they will already have that old tire and rim apart to install the new tire. Most tire shops usually include the mounting labor for a new tire in the price of the tire and some tire shops will included tire balancing in that price as well. Maybe find another tire shop and get a quote from them on the 2 tires and 1 sensor replacement. Might be cheaper than a Ford dealership.

Exproblems. thank you once again for the information. Appreciate it a ton. :D
