Hi guys:

I just bought a used explorer, so I've been using the forums to clean up my X a little. This is my 3rd Explorer.

Anyway, this one is a 1997 V8 AWD with an Auto (49k). I was told it was a AOD transmission, but I haven't confirmed yet. When I come to a complete stop, after I take my foot off the brake a get a big "Thud" sound from the driveline. Is this the drive shaft? How do I fix it?

Also, I get a lot of whine from the transfer case. Will changing the fluid make the noise go down a little? It's usually only between rpms of 1500 - 2500ish.

Thanks

Most likly U-joints

Actually you have the 4r70w Close to the aod but not the same.

Probably the Transfer Case...I'm having the same "thud". Ireplaced the CV axles and joints ...still no fix. Let me know what you find.

THanks

Is it 1 single thud, right under your feet(driver) when starting from stop, or from reverse to forward?
Like someone hit under floor with a hammer?

Did you find it yet?
When I worked for GM we had the same problem and what the "fix" was .. was to remove the drive shaft and put a little greese on the output shaft of the trans where it went into the drive shaft. it sounded nuts but it did work.

guys i was told at the dealer that the noise was normal. they said its the driveshaft "winding up" after being stoped. sounded like bs to me but i didnt know it was a common problem.I have checked my u-joints trans with no luck.

the slip yoke.

puill your drive shaft off and lube the hell out of the tranny end with white lithium and it'll go away :)
