Okay, so I hear a little clank everytime i start my truck and from what ive read is that is a sign of a work timing chain. Luckily I have a spare Explorer laying around. It is a 1998 4.0 SOHC just like mine. Only difference is that its a 2wd. I want to pull that motor (bad timing chains) and rebuild the timing chains in that one. What all parts do I need and where can i get them? Also, would a transmission out of a 2wd work on a 4wd?

If it's just a clank at start, you might try replacing the screw-in tensioners before you get into doing a full chain job.

There are countless threads here about those jobs. Start in the sticky threads, and look up StreetRod2000's threads that cover it all in detail.

Do I have to pull the motor to change the screw in tensioners?

check compression

Does the engine with the bad timing chains still run? If not, it may not be worth replacing the timing chains. If you don't know the condition of the engine I suggest you check the compression before investing in a timing chain kit and the timing tool kit. You should have compression in all cylinders even if you rotate the crankshaft using a socket drive.
