Tint removal question

I know it has been discussed on here before about heating up tint and using soap/water to remove, but what about very old, bubbly, cracked tint? Any suggestions. The tint I'm trying to remove is just breaking apart. Is there a solution or something that will help?

I would use some spray can window cleaner and a few sharp razor blades held very, very flat.

Finish it off with #0000 steel wool.

Agreed, do be careful with razor the blades. It will take quite a while, your fingers will get sore. Be sure to use brand new razor blades. If it takes a long time, discard the razor blade occasionally, old blades will scratch window glass. Start at the top, and work down. Spray window cleaner in the crease often.

I removed complete purple(old) tint from an 85 Mark VII, the rear glass(defroster) is a b***h(four hours). Good luck,

the glue is annoying.....use a soapy cleaner with a razor blade held flat like the above guy said...

yeah, I started to peel some of it and it looked like the purple was coming off and leaving the clear glue film behind. Thanks for the suggestions. What I am working with is my wife's old 89 CRX that we have started drving cause of the gas situation. Both of our x's are sitting for now.

Use a scraper to remove most of the tint. Then use lacquer thinner, or mineral spirits to remove the left over adhesive. Put it on a rag, pass it on the window let it sit for a 10/15 seconds, then come back with the razor and scoope it up. Anything left over(tiny bits) just use the rag to rub it out.

Spray window cleaner will soften the glue enough to use a brand new razor blade to remove the glue. Remove the film first, that is the hard part. The glue is easy, do it last. Regards,

i used a hair dyer to heat the tint up. then i used the razor blade to get the tint to start pealing, then just pealed it back...

Then i used OPPS to get all the old adhesive off. worked like a charm.

if u have access to a heat gun use it, i used my milwaukee heat gun for my tint just peeled right off..

I removed the tint off my f-350 by following the tint shops directions to spray 409 on the tint then place a black trash bag over the tint. Let it sit in the sun for a hour and the tint will peel right off. Worked on my truck.. fyi....

yep thats what i was told to do, not that i did that though, i just used a razor to get the tint peeled up, than jsut peeled it off, what residue that was left i used some cleaner and a razor to get off

You have probably already taken care of your problem by now, but I have a good solution for this one! Take some regular household ammonia and put it in a spray bottle, and literally soak your windows with it. Then take your razor blades and slide it under the tint, make sure that the ammonia gets underneath it. Should come right off, looks frightenly like snot and has a terrible odor, but it works! Finish up with some regular window cleaner and some lint-free paper towels!
