To cam or not to cam? 4.0 OHV

Ok, Here's a few pics.

I'm interested in comments on what the old heads look like. The burn in two cylinders is not good. These were the two that kept fouling plugs.

Oil consumption was around a litre every 6000 kilometers, so not bad.

I sure hope the new heads fix this issue. It feels oily, but that could still be coolant I think.

The next pic is of the cam sensor with allignment tool on it before I pulled the sensor. I needed to see what it will look like when I re-install. Notice the arrow on the allignment tool points to the back of the motor. Is that right?

Bit of a pain cleaning the gasket surfacees at the heads on the block. Wiring, Power steering, and air conditioning all make it difficult on the drivers side.

thanks for that Xeek.

Mine was ebay. As long as it does the job. Does your cam sensor plug in point at the back of the motor also? I sure hope I'm not doing something wrong.

Thanks for the pic. Yup, different for sure.
I sure hope my package from Delta cams shows up tomorrow. I really want to start putting things back together and see what challenges lay ahead.

Anyone have the part number for the crankshaft pully bolt? Im being told by the ford dealer there isn't one in Canada. I find it hard to believe.

Part 6A340

Part 6A340

A thing of beauti!
Suddenly they have one.

Full part number: E7RY-6A340-B
$11.10

On my way to get it now. Still no cam though. :-( Its been 2 weeks. Im waiting for a call back from Delta to see if they can give me a tracking number.

Sorry was copy&paste from my phone.thought i put the whole number up.either way you found it.;)

Still nothing from Delta cams. Ordered 3 weeks ago. I keep calling, and they say they shipped (Im sure they have) but can give me no further information.

I am having issues with those exhaust manifold studs stuck in the heads. I broke the top off two already. PB Blaster, heat...ugh.

Im going to stop by the auto wreaker and see if I can get some. Dealer wants $9.00 each for them, and there are none in the city.

All gasket surfaces are clean, and some painting has been done. With the prep work done, it shouldn't take long to put together once that cam shows up.

Should have went comp cams 410 and ford rockers/smith brothers pushrods.it all would be right, new and there bye now!!delta is slacking now of days,i no longer recommend them!!

After all my cursing, the parts are here. Everythings in the box. Cam, rocker assy's, and rods.

Shouldn't the rods have a oil hole thru the centre of them? These don't.

My stock set didn't, nor did the set I ordered from Smith Bros.. :dunno:

I guess since oil is delivered from the top through the rocker assembly, oil passages through the rod are unnecessary.

Nope

no, no oil holes in pushrods.
jd post the pic of yours and mine rockers.
dono, get a pic of the oil holes in your rockers.
just curious if they still make them with small oil holes or not. the ones i got had huge holes compared to jds broken delta set.

i agree on not buying from delta, i mean the stuff is ok, except that when i tried to order all i kept hearing was about their new forum and nothing about what i wanted to buy.

edit: nevermind, found it.
top is mine, bottom is jds old delta set. see how much bigger mine are? are yours bigger then the bottom ones maybe?

Top of first picture shows Delta rocker oil hole, and bottom of first picture shows Factory Ford oil hole. You will notice that the Delta oil holes are much smaller.

Second picture is my attempt to illustrate the Delta push rod length is slightly longer. Picture doesnt really show it that well, but there is a definate length difference.

I didn't get anything done last night. Baseball with the boy till 10:30, then I couldn't find my engine assembly lube. Strange. Only bought it two weeks ago. Hopefully tonight I will get something done.

Yea, I guess the only silver lining is that once the ticking starts, those of us with the delta rockers know what the problem is, and it's pretty easy to change them.

I have them now, so they will go in, and I'll hope for the best. As a side thought, I wonder what would happen if I drilled them out?
