whilst on private land i had a chance to see what the explorer could do,it got to 90 quite quickly and then on to 110 at 3000 and then it wouldnt go no more plus i was running out of road ,but evrything seemed to stop as if it was speed limited ,is this supposed to happen.thanks in advance

i think there is a limiter yes i have had the ex to about 110 awell (when it was set up better lol) then as you say it sort of just stops going any faster, now days though at about 90 it wobbles all over the place and jumps about-shocks maybe? whatever it is it sure is not nice.

on mine it was restricted to 105 mph but had no rev limit, iv taken the limit off with the help of sniper tunning software, another thing is the tires are speed rated to 112mph code "S", what happens if i go over them? i did a brief speed of 115 on the sat nav thats nearly 120mph on the clocks on the motorway, it does feel like beinng on jelly with them big side wall tires at them 90+ speeds.

thanks for the replys everyone ,so if it wasnt limited it should realisticly go well off the clock on its way to 140ish if everything was just right .i have to say this is a good motor ive tried on wet grass at my caravan park and it flew as if on tarmac, cant wait to go offroading when i get a chance, thanks again ,

I have to agree it is limited, and its good it is!
In my old 98 xlt I took her to 110 too, and the ride was just frightening- it felt really unsafe and twitchy, I never stayed there long, I think its a combination of the arc shocks being crap and the fact that its like a fast shed for wind resistance!
More happy upto 80 than faster even in my Northface- it is said these have revised suspension..........All I know is I see a front anti roll bar and a rear one, the shocks look the same as the 98 xlt and thats it! Dont feel any better and I have changed the anti roll bar bushes for poly and changed the drop links too. Juust waiting delivery of a pair of low mileage rear arc shocks as I do know mine are knackered- will try again when I fit them and let you know!

As far as the speed thing goes i just tell my mates who have their little tin sports cars "you can go fast, i can go anywhere", enough said :P

i must admit i didnt buy it for the speed but for comfort and space,as bighvm said its just as well it is limited due to handling issues ,ive driven a few different cars and so far nothing has touched the explorer for all round pracibility and performance, only the other day i went to the shops and there was no spaces left but a double kerbed mound a foot and half high so i parked on that, the look on peoples faces was priceless .cheers richard

I will park on top of a smart car next- that will raise some eyebrows!

HHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! (dont think I cant and wont!)

so does anyone know how to de-restrict the ex as im eager to see what shell really do plus i do like a bit more top end (for those private roads) mine does not seem to have the rev limiter only the top end one that makes you feel like your engine has just siezed also ive been looking at fitting 22 or 24 inch wheels so that should sort a lot of the handling problems out .........ill be keeping some standerd wheels for off road fun

hi mate, here's my 10 penneth for what its worth.

by all means de-restrict your car, after all it is a free country. but do be forwarned of the dangers of taking one of these things up to that kind of road speed. it will be pitching and rolling around like a bronco, and will be very unstable with a complete loss of control not too far away. couple this with the private road and you could find yourself in a nasty situation with no one aware of your predicament.
stick to what they are made for, and hey presto no worries. push a 4x4 beyond its intended road speed(hense restrictor) and you will be in trouble.
now the restrictor is based on what a brand new or fully inspected and serviced vehicle is capable of. stick 80,90, 100 thousand miles on one with little or no servicing .........

just my take, not preaching.

be safe mate,
mick.

i would have to agree with the above really,i have taken mine to the point that i was just along for the ride for a while and control was long gone on a country lane, not safe really lost any ability to stear or stop, same thing starts to happen at the 110 point on straight roads, more top end is always useful but not upside down.
would need to lower the ex and get much more suitable tyres to take the top end any further i think, and maybe loose the self levelling shocks, but then prob cheaper to buy a grand cherokee or a p38 rangey.

To do that mate you need the sniper software tool to do it, iv done it, i can see this doin a good 140 but not on speed rated tires we have for 112mph, the 22/24 inch wheels should help on this and make sure the tyres are suited for 140mph +. the clocks on ours are abit out, doin 120 i was really doin 115 on the sat nav and that was at 4k rpm area on overdrive.

It has to be done via a PCM tune.

Contact an SCT dealer for details.

thanks for all the advice but i wont be doing away with the ex to by a cherokee (nasty thought) and i dont like the range as much so thats that idea out of the window as for being unsafe at high peeds id agree but thats where my skills should come in handy as ive been working /modyfying jap performance cars for as long as i can remember so am no stranger to 150+mph and can imagine how unstable the ex would be near those speeds but with the right mods i.e big wheels good tyres with as someone said the right speed rating and some nice new adjustable GAZ shocks plus a couple of other bits that can be done for more stabilaty it should be no problem and as im after a supercharger removing the top end restrictor should compliment it perfectley............ITS NICE TO KNOW YOU ALL CARE.............pcm here i come...............

In Richmond you'll probably have soon mate, what with the parking charges just the other side of the Kew bridge here.

let us know about them wheels i wonder if they make the ride bumpy as i like it the way it is now

ive been told they will make the ride a bit harder and it will be like a tram when it comes to lorry tracks in the road but should look great....just waiting for the funds now...also ive decided to leave the top speed alone for now as its fine as it is i suppose
