Hello I had recently rebuilt my engine and trans, drove fine for 8 months then I started hearing a scratching sort of sound coming from bell housing, concerned I took it off the road and pulled the trans and what I found so far is torque converter hub has score marks( deep ones too )all around it any ideas what could have caused this? what to look for? And recommendations for a quality reman converter tired of eBay crap!

No idea what a TC hub is, a picture would be great.

The "hub", to me, is the small "snout" sticking out of the rear center of the converter. It helps support the weight of the converter, provides a smooth surface for the oil seal to ride on, and has notches or ears that drive the oil pump. If that is the surface you are describing as damaged, it is likely from interference, breakage, or other damage in the pump area, I'd say.

If you're talking about the back, rounded surface of the converter shell being scored, was it hitting the inside of the transmission case? Is the flex plate damaged, allowing the converter to slide backwards? Did you re-use the old converter, or replace it? Is replacement the correct one? imp

I'm talking about the part that slides into the transmission and engage s pump gears.the torque Converter was a reman from torco on eBay first one they sent me was complete junk out of the box had to immediately pull the trans again the second one was fine until this.flex plate was also new and undamaged which worried me before hand because I never did check the run out on the crank after rebuild of the engine.hadn't got a chance to pull the pump apart yet just trying to get some advice together weird thing is it rides in a brass bushing inside the trans how would that score the steel on the converter hub any way just trying to get this straight because Iv pulled the trans 3 times and the engine twice since Iv had the truck (10 years).also recommendations for a quality torque converter

I wonder if misalignment of the pump could cause this? Was your pump alignment good?

@drdoom
Good point, as usual! Seems I've seen or heard of a pump alignment tool. Certain Bronzes used for bearing surfaces can easily cut into steel. Aluminum Bronze, for example, which I used to make pistons and spool valves for my steam locomotive, lets out a scream when a toolbit cuts into it! Very tenacious material. imp

I seem to remember, when the TCC system failed in my truck, the torque converter hub was chewed up the same way. But when I was rebuilding the transmission, the bell housing bushing was not in bad shape at all, and the pump was fine as well. Matter of fact, the new bushing is still in the 5R55E parts bin in our shop.

Well my father in law built it I did the engine but have no experience with transmissions I believe your right that it's bronze and not brass I'm waiting on him to pull the pump housing before I know any thing more and he is very meticulous and a car/mechanical fanatic even though he was never an auto mechanic professionally he has done countless restorations engine and transmission rebuilds and he did buy a pump alignment tool for the a4ld in the bronco 2 so I don't know hopefully just another junk torque converter because like what mentioned no apparent damage so far to the bushing or seal will no more when the pump housing is pulled ..............But!! I would still like some recommendations for a quality torque converter because so far I know I'm going to at least need one of those.

Check for missing engine dowel pins, this can cause the transmission not to be aligned with the crank and will cause premature failure like this. The bushing in the pump will also have to be replaced.

Ok pulled the pump,the front bushing is actually toast and there's also scoring on the pump shaft it seems that the torque converter wasn't seated all the way into the pump gear not sure how that could of happened.the dowel pins are present.I'm kind of stumped one day it just started making noise and it seems the torque converter was wobbling for some reason I'm going to try to put a dial on the crank first the engine was hydro locked before I rebuilt it and like a dummy I never did get the crank looked at it's going to break my heart if I have to pull that engine for the third time.
