Towing a U-Haul 12 foot trailer through Kentucky.

All uhaul enclosed trailers have brakes. All of their double axle trailers have brakes. Get insurance on the trailer, and your car insurance covers whatever is in the trailer.

My Mounty tows great, and I’d much rather be in it than a truck like a Ranger or Colorado.

I really don't consider them a truck although I quite often seen them towing way over their limit. I live on I-70 in Colorado so I see a lot of unsafe towing going on.

As for
I'd tow with it too. The explorer will do fine moving the trailer. I'm curious what the speed is when the trailer will start to violently sway? Years ago I rented a 6x12 and asked my dad to pick it up with his 89 jeep Cherokee. Above 50 mph it was like the tail was wagging the dog.

The "tail wagging the dog" can be eliminated by knowing how to load the trailer. I don't have the specs on just how to do it but there needs to be a substantial amount of weight placed on the tongue of the trailer instead of the rear of the trailer. Properly loaded you will not get any sway or tail wagging.

I’m not worried about the engine. That 3.5L is strong. In fact it could be ordered in NA for the F150 XLT 4x4 at the time.

It’s the transmission. I know it’s a police car but still. 5000 pound tow rating? That’s gonna push it hard up the hills.
Not knowing which year you have, I looked up the towing weights for a 2015 PIU.

You typically need 10+ percent of the weight on the ball to make the towing reasonable.

Scangauge II will monitor trans temps when the proper programming sequence is entered.

or, if the transmission has a drain plug you could change it to a threaded sensor for an oil temperature gauge sender run to a pillar pod mounted oil temperature guage.

It appears the actual towing weight is 1/2 of what the member mentioned so there may be other issues.

I tow a horse trailer with 2 horses and all necessary gear in it with my 4 wd 2015 xlt with the 3.5 na and tow package. Fully loaded it tops out at 4200 pounds (yes I went to a truck stop and weighed it) and the explorer tows it beautifully but I personally will not go above 4500 pounds.

The 5x8 single axle enclosed U-Haul trailer does not have surge or any kind of brakes.

Also, I second that how you load the trailer is what causes the tail wagging.

Okay. All enclosed trailers besides the 5x8 have brakes. I doubt you can do a move like is being inquired about with a 5x8.

I’ve got the 6x12 ordered for the 15th. I’ll try to upload a picture.

I’m going to take the above mentioned advice and have it weighed before I venture south.

Ok I’m in Tennessee! Going good so far. The coolant temperature went up “1 pixel” that’s it.
