My friend's ex wife has a 2004 Toyota Camry 3.0 v6

This is his kid's mom, so he's being a good dad-I guess it is time for the 90k service, which means timing belt and idlers. He asked if we could do this in my garage--

Is there anything I need to know? She was quoted like 800.00 for parts and labor. That makes me think there is more to this story--

If you havent done one before dont do it. The timing componet kit its self is probably 300-400. Its a preety big tear down and you have to remove the motor mount and place a jack under the engine. It takes about half a day to do one. The timing kits do come with instructions but if your just one tooth off its gonna run like crap either at idle or at higher rpms depending on which way your off. Its better to pay to have it done. Especially if its a interference engine. You dont want to be to blame when you mess up and bend some valves.

ok
I have replaced timing belts in the following-
96 mercury mistake
98 escort
2002 escort
95 mits talon---edit-'scuse me it was an eclipse-

am I qualified?

From what I am reading--
camshaft front seal
crank front seal
water pump ( is this really necessary?)
idlers
some kind of cam pressure idler thingy for the variable timing-

These are all in there--which can be skipped and which can not?

I dont know your skill level. Was just trying to help out. If you feel like you can do the job then do it.

Sorry, I was being serious.
You never know when a "special tool" gremlin can bite you-
I have no manual yet--

Sorry i was just reading you wrong. Might as well change the water pump. Cuz if it goes out in 6 months down the road then youll have to take the belt back off any way. I would skip the seals unless thier leaking. Some cars require a special tool that holds the cams in sync. I believe your tensioner is hydraulic and just take it off and compress it in a vise (slowly). I usually use a tiny drill bit to keep it compressed in the holes at the end of the ram and cylinder. Youve done quite a bit of timing belts so im pretty sure you know how to get the belt tight on the non tension side. I havent done a yota if a few months so im not really remembering everything about them right now. Hope this helps.

My local Toyota dealer has a timing belt and water pump special. They would do the job for around $500.

That is on my 92 Paseo though.

Also consider, if applicable...

timing belt tensioner
serpentine belt(s)

Might as well change the water pump. Cuz if it goes out in 6 months down the road then youll have to take the belt back off any way.

X2

Last time, I just changed my timing belt. Now my water pump is going out, possibly. For the amount of money to get them both done, instead of just one, I'll get them both changed.

The componet kit comes with new idlers.
