The last few days, when i first start to drive, the tranny has been acting up till it warms up, it doesnt like to shift unless i get off the throttle, but when its warm it seems to help, i've been taking it really easy on the trottle,(havnt had it above about 2200-2500). I was thinking changing the filter and fluid may extend the life somewhat, any suggestions??

is it only the 1-2 shift that is an issue when it's cold? how does the tranny shift if you contol the shifts manually?

it's probably your speed governor that is clogged. if you search for it here you'll find threads on cleaning it. basically drop the transfer case, remove the speed governor and clean it.

what sux is in my experience clogged speed governors often mean tranny problems else where. :(

anyway, it cant hurt to clean and polish the speed governor and see what happens.

I have a similar problem with my 93' xlt except mine shifts fine when it is cold and after it warms up then it hangs in first gear until I start feathering the gas pedal. I just changed the vacum shift module and changed the tranny fluid and filter . It didnt change a damn!!THING. Oh well Im going to try cleaning the speed govenor this weekend. Good Luck!

My '94 has a problem somewhat related. Once the vehicle warms up, on takoff, I will feel a loss of power, potentially the tranny is slipping, for maybe a second or two then all is fine. For now I am just living with it but if it gets worse, the problem will probably become obvious as to what is wrong.

seems to be most noticable on the 1-2 shifts havnt tried manual shiifting it yet. I might bring it to a local tranny shop and have them check it out.

That would be my first choice before spending anymore money on anything else.

it is a risk. transmissions that don't have to routine fluid changes seem to revolt when it's done after accumulating many miles.

it's a tough call. if may be a cure all for you, it may cause you more problems. the speed governor can be cleaned for free and the only fluid you loose will be that from the transfer case...

As far as i know i dont think the fliud has been changed in some time, im not sure if i want to go messing around with anything that would kill the tranny any sooner, i just hope it doesnt totally crap out before i get done with my monte.

or before march considering you live in NY... lol.

worst case senario the tranny grenades on you. depending upon the condition of your truck and the amount of coin you have in it just get it rebuilt.

how is the rest of your truck?

mine slips i think when i let go of the gas (in fourth) then when i push on it a bit again, it like sticks in third for a second or so then shifts back up to fourth.

It could be just a dirty tranny filter and fliuid. Up here in Canada, I have had several vehicles do that when cold. I'll bet it shifts fine after it heats up--right? A jiffy lube would be a cheaper bet before tearing into expensive parts. Hope it turns out minor.

note - we just changed our tranny fluid and filter and this problem started then.

Did you put the O rings on the filter and the bolt on some newer filters bottoms out befor it snuggs up to the VB causing it to drop down.

only thing it said to do was put the new o-ring on when i replaced it. I dont know what the other thing is your talking about, can you enlighten me?

Opera is talking about the filter mount bolt- some of them need a spacer to keep the thread length into the valve body the same.

Anyone working on the speed govenor- The superior shift kit includes an anti stick spring for the speed govenor- its a good thing to install if you have the governor apart. Should prevent a recurrance of the problem.

Besides the tranny the truck is pretty close to Mint, no dings, rust, or any thing else. I think i may try the fluid and filter change, the fluid looks a little crudy, ill do that and most likely slap a FOR SALE sign on it, i dont want to put any money into it.

its almost 10 years old, youl probably need to throw money into it, or be prepared to spend even more. Our 94 is basically mint, no rust (anymore) and a few dings, just from stupid mistakes. but we still need new hubs (warn manuals probably), ball joints, alignment, tires, etc. Thats alot of money needing to be spent, but not critical repairs at the moment. Best thing to do, is know what your gonna need to fix, and save for it, find out if anything else will be damaged if the problem is left too long. We dont care about the aligment right now, because we need new tires anyways.

Either way, be prepared to spend some, and if your lucky you wont need to. Just make sure to keep up routine maintenance.

Well i went to a local tranny shop and they test drove it, the guy said he didnt see a real problem with it, but said since it was only doing it when the truck was cold to leave it over night and they would do a full diognostic on it, free of charge.
