Tranny bites the dust again

My A4LD made it to nearly 290k with the stock A4LD, and then 4th gear decided to go, which is not uncommon, so now its a 3 speed with lockup.

Good thing mines got 3.08 gears.

So what I have decide is a friend has a tranny out of a 94 with 93000 miles on going to keep for sometime because she wants a new car in the spring it's only going to cost me about 1050.00 for everything and look around for another vehicle later.

I vote against the manual swap, though not as often, the manuals go too, I am on my 2nd manual, and it was the 2nd tranny in the Ex it came out of. When I was looking for a tranny it was hard to find a parts Ex, because the tranny's were shot. Usually the gears lock up, or the shaft snaps off like a twig (like mine). So I vote for putting better quality parts in the auto.

Does anyone need a core tranny I have one if anyone needs it

there is a company who offer conversion kits and info from v6 to v8 and they say that you can use an aod or switch to a 5 speed. I have a 94 with 240k and when it goes going to put in a 5 speed from a mustang with the help of adapters. look into different options.

Sounds like your auto tranny is not being rebuild correctly with improvements and updates.

Sure these transmissions can't hold a lot of torque, but if you have a correctly built A4LD and as long as you dont strain it (towing) there is no reason why you shouldn't get 150k+ miles out of it.

The point of this message is don't be afraid to rebuild your A4LD again. But this time something is going to have to be done differently. Find a rebuilder who can not just rebuild it, but rebuild it to last.

4 transmissions sounds like overkill for a truck with only 180k.

Personally, I would prefer a manual, but down here I do a lot of intown driving and thats just not feasible with a manual.

After one trans failure it is likely to have some debris in the cooling system. Ideally the radiator and lines and cooler should be replaced. Many trans shops require that for a warantee, or at least install a filter in the return line to the trans. I'd suggest swapping the radiator and coolers with new or used, plus the extra filter.

Rebuild the valve body with an aftermarket kit, and upgrade the trans with the best parts listed in the A4LD diary thread. The extra cost of the VB kit should be under $40. Replace all of the shift solenoids and accumulators. The trans can survive, but special care must happen or it will not. Regards,

hire a lawyer and go after the goof that rebuilt it so poorly.
or do like i did.......search and search until you find a 4 door with a manual.

I really don't know why you guys are so crazy over the manual's, the're really not much better, and there is more work and money adding all the conversion extras. (my manual snapped at 190,000)

I guess the M5OD-HD was used in the F-150 at the time, and was pretty tough, but theres nothing special about the regular M5OD used in the explorer.

Out of the two trannys, I would always choose the A4LD.
