i just thought of a another ?

what kind of transmission fluid should I use If I have a 97 exp 4x4? and how can I tell if it is 4x4 or Awd
also is it safe to do a transmission flush my self by droping the tranny lines and letting it circulate quart at a time or will that put too much pressure on my tranny.
i sunk my truck into water and I know there is water in my tranny so will that affect the flush??

sorry for all the question i dont mean to bother anyone
and thankyou everyone who is helped me yall are badass's

I've only seen a tranny flushed with a flushing machine.

It actually pumps fliud through the tranny while removing the old fliud.

I have a '97 XLT 4WD. I used 15 quarts of Mercon V to completely flush my tranny last spring. Someone has done the step by step instruction on this but I can't seem to find it for you. You might have a better luck. Try to use the search button above the thread see if you could come up with something that might be helpful for you. Have fun reading! :)

thanks for the quick reply im about to tackle the job.

is doing the tranny flush my self bad for my tranny?

You should first be changing the filter. While the pan is off put in a drain plug. You can then drain the fluid once a year and get most all the benefits of a complete fluid change. Even if you do the flush the filter needs to be changed.

thanks but ive already droped the tranny pan and changed the filter---

Jeeze i havent been here in a while:) , anyway if you have done the filter, I,ll tell ya how i did the rest,
I took a hose off the tranny cooler(cant remember which) and attached it to a five gallon pail, you must attach it as there is lots of pressure, then put a funnel in dip stick tube, start engine and pour fresh fluid into tube while it drains to bucket. Once fluid looks clean it should be OK, top up as req.
A extra set of hands is almost required, and its a very messy job, but always satisfying to do it yourself.
It is wrote up here or on the Explorer maint. site somewhere.
Good luck, Todd

Goodluck.

thanxs

but there was no luck on that flush!!!

I drove it up to the gas station and on the way there it drove perfectly find no hesitation!!! but on the way home it wasnt just hesitating into 2nd it was hesitating in all my gears.. once i got home i checked my tranny fluid and it was fine, but i noticed my caytlitic converter was smoking out of control.. my cat sits right under my tranny.. could the really hot heat from my cat cause my tranny to heat up and hesitate??

plus my buddy shook my expo side to side while I was under it and i heard water in my exahust system could that be the cause of the over heating to my cat???

any answers would help!!!! :(
thank you

Hazards of a flush is loosening a big enough piece of gunk to clog a valve. Or your trans filter could have come loose. I had that happen once (loose filter) and it caused it to hesitate shifts.
Water in the exhaust should boil away after it heats up. Dont thing it would take long. Sure it wasnt the gas tank he heard?
I dont think your cats are the cause of any hesitation.
Your transfer case isnt effected by the flush. So that may need to be changed also.

alright, but what I dont understand is when I drove to the gas station it drove perfect but on the way home, after it heated up from the cat, it barely drove...so what im asking is could a tranny hesitate because it is too hot?

Ya the tranny could if its too hot. I think your cats wouldnt get the trans that hot. I think your filter came loose. The cats get real hot whenever you drive. There is a heat shield on the trans already so I dont think it is that.
I thought in your post about going to the gas station that you had a flush done there. If you didnt it is probably your filter come loose.
Only one way to find out. If it is than your need to put a large washer on the bolt that holds the filter in place.

yea I dont think it is over heating.... I did my tranny flush and put my filter on 2 days ago and i dont think its that.... Ive driven about 3 more times and ive came to the conclusion thats its the od sensor in the tranny pan.. I think either this sensor or one of my other sensors shorted out when my truck was submerged in water.. does that sound right??

also when im driving down the road and my od starts sliping really bad if i shift it into 1st gear manually(with the steering column shifter) and it shifts fine into 2nd with no hesitation...

tell me what you think

ps does synthetic engine oil appear the same as regular oil on the dipstick because I changed my oil to synthetic and I can barely see the oil on the dipstick

You should put which engine you have on your profile. I suspect this is a V6 SOHC with the 5R55E tranny. Some common problems are the filter dropping down because the new hardware wasn't used. The old bolt is too long and won't tighten up. So after a few miles, it drops down and then the pump sucks air. The 5R55E is known to blow out the gasket on the low/reverse servo. Any time you drop the pan you should tighten up the bolts on the valve body. These get loose and there are some locations where the bolt spacing is wider than it used to be on the A4LD. This makes it very prown to blowing out a gasket if the bolts get a little loose.

Wow.. really nice to know... now im gonna drop my tranny pan again tomm. its alright cause i was goning to anyway to put a drain plug on it... where is the gasket that you are talking about at?... for some reason I think its one of my sensors that is messed up.. i think water shorted one of them out...

tranny flush, more....

Where do you put the drain plug, on the pan, or up on the torque converter?

to get a total drain it would seem a drain on the TC would be required. a pan drain would only get the 3-4 qts in the pan, but not the 10 or so in the TC.
please clarify, Im getting ready to start as well.

thanks

If you have the same type bell housing over your tq as i do it is impossible to even get to your tq... putting in a drain plug would simpllly allow me to drain the tranny fluid through the tranny pan and then cycle it out manually by unhooking the tranny cooler line, starting car, draining 1 quart out and replace 1 quart in till it comes out the color I want it.. doing this every 20k miles is good maintence...correct me if im wrong...

Putting a drain plug in the trans pan is very good if you are changing the trans. filter. It allows most of the fluid to run out in a controled fashion. Much less messy than dropping a pan full of fluid.
Trans fluid lasts a long time. Refreshing it once a year with the 4 or so quarts you need when you change the filter is usually sufficient to keep it in good repair.
If you still got problems with your trans after doing a filter change a flush is probably not gonna help. Sorta like taking an asprin for a broken bone. Some things just gotta be worked on.
Seems like most people dont think about the trans untill there is a problem and then are dissapointed when a flush or filter dont cure it.
Preventive maint. is the way to go....
