I just picked up a 2002 explorer v8 and have had trouble with it since i first picked it up with the tranny. when i come back from a drive and go to put it back into park, i am having a lot of trouble, it physically will not go into park and i have to constantly play with the shift handle moving it from drive back to park to get it to finally go in. it has also developed a leak coming from the belhousing area. Any help would be great.

Well, this isn't really any help, but I just had my tranny replaced in my 02 Explorer 4.0 from the stealership and it was $4500. It comes with a 75,000 mile warranty though.

Welcome to this forum! What kind of problem do you have with your transmission? I would suggest that you go back to them, and not touch anything since they will try to get out of the warranty. That is a lot of money for a transmission.

Thanks,
i recently traded my 94 in with 204k on it. hopefully i will have as good of luck with this one like i did with that one. im bringing it in to the dealer tomorrow to have them replace wheel bearings that i noticed on the test drive. get this though, when i went to test drive it, the salesman brought it up to the showroom and didnt put it into park all the way(which he thought he did) he hopped out of the truck and it started rolling. he proceded to chase after it and it ran over his leg. :( i think i have some good ground to stand on with a tranny problem if they give me any BS. The only thing is that i bought it form a reputable dodge dealership, hopefully they will send it to a dealer.

Holy HELL that is highway robbery!!! I cannot believe that dealerships and mechanics are charging that much for a tranny. Just unbelievable.

BTW, Exrange if you have the 2wd V8 Explorer then I have my stock 5R55W tranny for sale out of my 2003 Explorer. Only has 7,000 miles on the tranny (only 7,000 miles on my X too. :D ) and in perfect working condition and only want $1,000+ shipping so I can get it out of my garage.

Whatever you decide to do I wish you the best of luck and hope they don't try to bend you over. Sometimes used car dealerships will warranty a vehicle for 30 days but usually not much beyond that from what I have seen.

I occassionally have trouble getting mine in and out of park. It also sometimes will shift roughly going in and out of second. I wonder if it is about to go out?

I thought that $1,500-$2,500 was a lot until I saw that.

Was $15k for our Jag when I killed the tranny! Lucky it was under warranty!

I don't know if this is related or not, but when I do go from anything to Park, there is a slight pop. The shifter will go up all the way and into park, but then it will actually click into park once the truck rolls a little. It's never come out of park or anything, just not sure if this would be the beginning of the problem you are having. I've heard a few people having the same issue though.

It is a Ford transmission! You could buy a car for $15K. The name of this thread should be changed to "How much did you pay for your transmission".

Actually, it's a German ZF unit, exactly the same one used by Mercedes in their AMG vehicles. (Imagine that! German technology being the weak link! :p: ) I'm not gonna tell you how much they would love to charge for transmission fluid per quart! Looked great on the invoice though... total $15k, amount due, $100!

Well they dont know where the leak is coming from when it was obvious with all the fluid all over the pan and a puddle in my driveway. They called me last night and said they heard a wheel bearing noise and replaced 1 rear bearing but they are still hearing a whine....i dont think they know what they are looking for.

Well the X is done, they replaced a shift interlock cable that they said was kinked and the front tranny seal. Are these common problems with the 02??
