In the process of rebuilding my engine. Before I re-install the tranny, I want to get it checked out. I got a quote of $650 for a "soft parts overhaul" (clutches, seals, etc) Does this price sound fair if needed? It's an automatic.
Thanks
John

How many miles on the tranny? Did you have any problems with it before the engine rebuild?

The Explorer had 168,000 when I bought it. The tranny seemed fine at first. Shortly after buying it, I changed the filter/fluid. It had a little sludge built up on the magnet. After replacing everything, I started noticing a slight slip in reverse when starting off in the morning. It was also noticeable when going into drive, but only once or twice. I thought maybe the fluid might have been low since it seemed ok before I change the fluid. Anyhow, since I had it out while rebuilding the engine, I wanted to get it checked to ensure everything was ok. I would hate to have to pull it back out later down the road. The shop gave the $650 quote with a one year warranty. I should be getting the call tomorrow letting me know what, if anything, is wrong. The shop also advised of a new tranny cooler. They have a Hayden for $50.00. Does anyone have other recommendations for a cooler?
Thanks for the help!

Long not Hayden

I would get the OEM stlye "Long" cooler. Its a much more efficient cooler. Check the thread on Trans fluid temps. I posted some info and a suggestion there( there are many sizes)

Soft parts rebuild may not last very long if the hard parts have much wear- you may have to pay twice for the soft parts if the hard parts fail. I assume the bands would be replaced. I would check on the installation of a valve body kit. The superior kit has new springs for one of the drums ( forgot which). couldnt hurt to install while they have it apart. Link:

Hope that helps some.

At 168K miles I say go with a complete rebuild and get it over with. There are many hard part upgrades available to overcome A4LD design flaws.
