It makes it about 100 times easier if you do, especially when you got to put the transmission back in.

The Y pipe is not that hard to remove, the stock bolts can be tricky and you might break a coulpe so be prepared to replace them (exhaust bolts)

Your job will also be alot easier if you take 20 minutes to remove the inner fenders skirts from both sides (plastic liners)
This will give you better access to the exhaust pipes, 02 sensor connections, dipstick, and bellhousing bolts.

soak the exhaust bolts with WD40 over night before you remove it. It is always good idea to replace the exhaust bolt when installing it again.

to get a little more room i removed the cat too. i removed mine with the transfer case still on but i was nly doing the clutch and slave

I have found with a 3" body lift removal of the y-pipe is not necessary. It is a tight fit but the added clearance of the body lift makes life easier.

I dunno if you have one, but thought I would add this little tid bit.

Rather than remove the Y pipe I cut about a 12" piece out it right under the tranny. After changing the clutch I rigged up a piece of flex pipe so it ran quiet on the way to the exhaust shop and I paid them to weld the cut out piece back in place. Worked great for me.
