I was driving in 2wd on my way home. I made the turn, and started to head up a hill. The explorer acted like it bogged down, and then there was a bang. the rpm's jummped up as if I shifted into neutral. so I dropped it into low 2, nothing, it acted like it was in neutral still. I dropped it into low 1, and made it up the hill, and to the house.

The next day, I drove it. as I pulled down the road, I got a loud whirling sound, that sounded like the torque converter. The truck sounded like something was binding up, as if I was trying to make a tight turn in 4x4. then it realeased, finally starting to roll. as I was going down the road, the rpm's would jump as if I was popping into neutral again. and this would repeats everytime I would start moving after a stop.

I am wondering if the 4 low is trying to engage, then popping into neutral, which it shouldn't because its a '98 with electroninc 4x4 switch. what doesn't list a neutral slot, jusat auto, 4 high, 4 low.

or is the tranny going, or the torque convertor? fluids were just checked and were ok.

I had this same problem in a 2door Tahoe about 2 years back, its acted like it was dropping out of Drive and going into neutral. after replacing the tranny and torque converter it still had the problem. turns out it was the clutches in the transfer case. i would get those checked first. good luck

It's not the torque converter but probably the transfer case.
