Hello, I'am going to put a used trans in my 2000 exp. It has a 5R55E and I was wondering what years will fit. I saw a sticky on this and it has me a little confused.

Explorer 91-94..................................4........................A4LD
Explorer (4.0L) 95-01.........................4.......................4R44E, 5R55E
Explorer (5.0L) 96-01.........................4.......................4R70W
Explorer (4.0, 4.6L) 02-03...................5.......................5R55W
Explorer (4.0, 4.6L) 2004....................5.......................5R55S
Explorer Sport, Sport Trac 01-04.........5.......................5R55E

Where it said 95 - 01 4R44E and 5R55E But then 4 speed Will a 01 work? I thought 2000 and 01 was different? What about the sport track? can I get an 04 with 4x4 and it will work as long as it is a 5R55E?

You need a 5R55E from the first year(1997?) till 2001. After that they had different cases on the transmission, even though they are called a 5R55E. The versions before 2002 have different cases for 2WD and 4WD. The later cases are all the same for 2WD and 4WD.

I'm not sure about the 2002+ Sport Tracs, the early ones could have the old 5R55E case, but don't count on it. The models through 2001 are basically the same, but you do need to know exactly which year and model it comes from. There are Ford updates available for the valve bodies of them, it would be wise to do something with the VB when it is not in the truck. Good luck,

I thought some of them had the update done before they left the factory. How can I tell what year they came out of? Say 1997- 2001?

Sellers should know where each is from, I'd avoid someone selling an unknown trans. They come with factory tags on them, parts guys can identify those. Those updates started about the time that the first generation was done, along the 2000/01 model year. I have a 99 with a trans labeled as remanufactured, and I installed a VB kit to be sure. The parts are not high, and it isn't much work to do. Regards,
