Trying to get my 2002 Ranger trans (M5OD-R1HD) set up in my 92 Explorer. It was an auto, and the clutch master/line I'm using came from a 91 Ranger. The quick connect won't pug in to the trans. Niether is siezed, they just seem incompatible. ARE there 2 different connectors? I have never heard of anyone having this problem swapping in a newer trans before. I am getting pissed off! This swap has gone on WAAAAY too long, due to one thing or another, and I'm soooo close to driving it now!

You got it.

The slave cylinder ports are different, you will need a slave cylinder and line from the same year for it to work right. I think they kinda went 01-03 but don't quote me on that. I know the 89-92, then 93-94, then 95-97 but I don't know from there.

If you'll note it will plug in but won't click. Been there done that ;), it can be a PIA until you figure it out. What's worse, Ford doesn't sell the line seperately. I swapped a 4.0 OHV in a 88GT and used a 96' M50D tranny with the 96 slave, well it wouldn't plug in. I got the 96 style slave cylinder from a salvage yard and took just the line out of the cylinder and put it on my cylinder because the pre-93's have a larger bore too.

You can change just the line by knocking out the roll pin in the firewall mounted end of the slave cylinder and plugging in the new style line but you'll either have to get a line or cylinder from a salvage yard. My recommendation, get the right slave cylinder for your line.

thanks, Doug.

Heh. Not funny. I really, REALLY don't want to pull that trans out again. You figure the slave is smaller on the newer ones, presumably the master is as well... Easiest at this point is to get a new master and line...

thanx for the info

Erik

Ford gets a pretty penny for the line and you wont find it anywhere else except a junk yard.
Get the correct master as well.

Now the other question: I assume that the new master will be a bolt in for the old one, as The cab doesn't seem to have changed since 93... Am I right?

thats correct the master will bolt in.

Lol....I ran into this exact same problem. I tried mating a 92 slave to a 97 quick disco line and the dang thing wouldn't fit. I'm glad this info is up here now for the next person that runs across this.

Sure they do. For the paltry sum of CDN$175 plus taxes, I could have 47 cents worth of plastic tube, and $3 of fittings assembled and packaged as a Genuine Ford Motorcraft clutch line! If I want it this week, I can pay shipping too! I've put the word out that I need an '02 line, with master if that's what it takes. Hopefully have an answer from the yard tomorrow. He doesn't have one, but will try to get me one from another yard. shipping cost is not an issue anymore, I just want it done.
To think that I hummed and hawed about making a braided stainless line with -AN fittings, and decided against it because I like the quick connect, and wanted to save a few bucks at this stage. Ha Ha. DOH!

OK, there ISN'T an 02 line at a wrecker in the area. What have we got, 3 million or so people? Can't ONE of them stuff a new Ranger? As it turns out, standard practice is to cut the line when dissassembling the vehicle, so they're all scrap. CHecking the parts book, the 01-04 parts are not yet available from the jobber suppliers. Listed as a 16mm master, 1-7/8 slave. Basically the same as the 5/8 master and 1-7/8 slave used from 93-00. Prior to that, there's 3 or 4 variations, including the 3/4 and 1-31/32 combo in 91 (which I happen to have). What I forgot to check is part numbers for the various year combo's. Maybe there's a chance that a 93-01 line would fit, having the same dimensions/ratio. I need to dig through my parts pile, there's a really slim chance I have a 93 master and possibly line there. I need the 5/8 or 16mm master anyway to get proper leverage.

Final information, if anyone cares:

To install a M5OD-R1HD into a 91-92 Explorer, (or any Ranger/B2 thru 92)you need the clutch master from a 93-94 Explorer. It might work with the existing one, but the bore is roughly 20% bigger than what the new slave is designed for, and may result in problems. I've mixed and matched sizes before, with both success AND failure, so I decided to play it safe and get the 5/8" bore master (91-92 Explorer is a 3/4" bore).

93 up rangers, and 95 up Explorers use a totally different master/mount/shape and would require a LOT of work to utilize, making the 93-94 Explorer the ONLY bolt in master of the correct displacement.

The line I used was from a 98 Explorer. It has a gold anodized fitting at the trans end, where the earlier ones I've seen were black. Guessing from what I've found on the master sizes, Any 93-up Ranger OR Explorer should work, but be sure to check it first.

Its all together, and seems like its bled enough, tho it's hard to say until I get a starter...

Hope this helps someone else, I went through a LOT of pissing around to figure it out the hard way.
