ok i know there is a gasket between the trans and t-case....now i've heard when i reinstall the t-case that i could just ignore that gasket and instead use something like rtv or silicone sealant stuff? is this true or do i need to buy a new gasket?

I"ve had the xfer case off a few times.. 1/2 the time I've used gaskets, and the rest of the time I use "right stuff" in the cheese wiz looking can.

Right stuff seals it well but it makes it hard to pull the xfer case the next time..

which way would you recommend then being u have done both? and the "right stuff" that u speak of is it prefered? or could i get by with my numerous tubes of rtv sealant/sealer which i have laying around (like what i used on my dear diff cover)

The only RTV stuff I use nowadays is right stuff as it works great for just about anything that isn't submerged in gas.

If you can get the gasket, use it.. and maybe just put a very light film on it to keep it in place until you get the bolts in there.. but not so much that it will make the transfer case stuck next time you try to take it off.

Soo, in short. RTV is easily to install but makes it harder to take off next time..

well thanks mark! i'll keep all this in mind...but maybe with the good thoughts i will never have to remove my xfer case again then it can be stuck on for good! LOL like that isnt one of the most far fetched dreams i have had in a while!

RTV's are rated for different applications. I have been told that many RTV's can be broken down buy ATF. The concern is not that it leaks but that a peice of the broken down RTV with get into the trans and cause trouble. So use only a gasket or the "right stuff". There my be other products out there approved for use with ATF. Most of the RTV's I have around for diff covers and such are NOT rated for ATF use.

Thats good info right there!

I learned something new today

I am about to do just this today, and just happened to stumble on this thread by accident. Good thing too, as I was going to use some super black RTV that was left over from a diff cover install.

Personally, I'd use a gasket - as mentioned, the RTV can be a PITA for next time.

Ended up going to dealer and getting a stock paper gasket. Only $5.00 and since I am removing the case in the very near future, this seemed the logical choice for me.
