Can I use Mercon V fluid in my transfer case?

I ready refrenced previous threads however it wasn't clear.

According to my Haynes Manual, no, use plain "Mercon ATF" for the Transfer Case. Mercon V is for the transmissions. The Transfer Case holds 1.5 Quarts.

You should only use Mercon V in the transfer case. Mercon ATF has been replaced by Mercon V

They still make plain Mercon, it's called Merc/Dex.

I have used Royal Purple Max ATF since 2011, my transfer case didn't explode yet. There has been confusion on wether to use Mercon or Mercon V from Ford. I'm assuming Mercon V is still ok to use.

My 2002 e/b specifies Mercon for the transfer case so just today I flushed it and refilled with Mercon V..

I went to my local P&A NAPA parts store and got two quarts of Motorcraft "Transfercase Fluid"
