My X had been making a "popping" noise under acceleration and going up hills, etc, and I took it to a transmission shop.. and they've quoted me nearly $1200 to fix it and that sounds like an AWEFUL lot to repair that.... is that about right, or should I seriously question it?

I don't know if they are replacing it or rebuilding it (I am calling back to find out).. but that price seems really high!

This is just not my week! grr

Considering you can throw another case in there for anywhere from $130-$350.. thats a lot of cash just to fix something. Transfer cases are very easy to install, so if you can, I'd reccommend just finding another and throwing it in.

We need more information.

Also if you took it to the shop to diagnose a popping noise, have they told you what is causing the popping noise?

Sounds to me like it could be MANY things, from the torshion bar retainers to a shot transmission.
If you can fiqure out whats causing the noise yourself (with help from this board) then you will have that much more ammo when you take it to a shop.

If you take it to a shop and say it is making a popping noise, fix it, they will take you for a ride......in my experience.

Is it an automatic or a stick (Assume auto)?

Where is the popping sounds coming from?

Yeah, I realized just after I posted I should have incuded more info.. it's a '96 EB (didn't those just come in one model?), they said the transfer case was probably causing it after doing their own free diagnostics and asking me to pay them to take the t-case it apart.. which I realize now may have been a mistake, as ford says the t-case from that year cannot be rebuilt...

I just don't know.. I want my X to work and for me not to pay more to fix it than what I've paid for it (which so far as been nothing - long story!).

You should not have to pay the shop to diagnose the problem.
If they cannot tell you if the T case is the source of the problem, then why do they want to take it apart?
Sounds like they are guessing and you foot the bill.

Fiond another shop or you will get taken for a ride.

Use this board to try and diagnose the noise first, it may not even be the T case. The T case is a simple device and when you are not in 4wd it is not likely to have any problems or be the source of any noise.
