Six days after having my wifes transfer case repaired at a local garage, I was driving it to work and it gave up on me again.
I spent a hundred dollars to have it towed, back to the shop :fire: (50 miles)
I phoned the service manger the next morning to ask him what the problem was, he said that they had taken an oil sample and there were filings in the oil.
"Big surprise!!" I said "have you pulled it out yet to have a look?"
He said he couldn't do that until I authourized the work to be done
To make a long story short this jackass took me for 2600.00 dollars and refused to even pull the case to see what the problem was unles I was paying!
He said that based on the oil he looked at it must be the bearings and he did not feel it he was under any obligation to even check his work, even though he diagnosed and then decided on repairs. he replaced the shaft and fork in the t case.

Any way I will get to the point of this post, I had it towed home ($85.00) and am going to the wreckers tomorrow to pick up a t case,
Does anyone know what year t cases are compatible with 95 explorer? apparently this shop got two in and neither fit so they told me it was more economical to repair for 700.00 and give no warranty than buy one for 400. with a four month warranty, ha ha.
I have a line on a transfer case our of a '96 for $350.00 will this fit?
Thanks in advance for any help and for reading my long rant/post
.......I do feel better. :D

Just editing here, did some research and it looks like it has to be either a borg warner 1354 or 4405, sound right?
auto hubs with dash selector, can't find tag on case

Welcome to this forum! I see that you are new here. There are a lot of articles on this forum pertaining to transfer case rebuilding. Maybe you could open it up, and just replace the defective parts instead of buying an entire transfer case.

$2,600? That is robbery. I can't belive you paid that without getting some second opinions. You could have gotten a junker BW4405 with super low miles for under $400. Hell a transmission shouldn't cost that to rebuild. I believe the t cases are the same from either 95-96, or 95-97.

Which T case do you have, do you know ? (And remember he is in Canada, so don't forget the exchange rate in dollars, yet it certainly does appear he was ripped off.)

Are you saying that you paid this guy $2600.00 or he wanted you to pay $2600.00? Where I live you can buy a used t-case for $300.00 with a 60 day warranty.

in 1996 the 4x4 t case was a borg warner 4405. Even with the exchange $1900 is a gravy price to rebuilt the t case. You can get real nice salvage cases for under $1000

I was thinking, and I think he confirmed, that in 95 stock was the 1354, and the 4405 was an option.

Tag is missing, going to pull case out in the morning to try and identify.
I talked to a ford dealer today and he says he can get model of transfer case from vin

I have checked several online vin decoders and none of them seem to have any data on transfer case.
Sorry I was a little unclear on the $2600 thing, that was total bill, transfer case portion was $700.
He asked me if I wanted a tune up while it was there and I thought, sure why not? Big mistake, he changed plug wires, fuel filter and pulled codes(list only no repair on codes), total for that 45 min job.......5.0 hours at $84.00, no plugs installed.
I was caught with my pants down and no time to make sure it was done right, I used to do all these things myself as former jeep rally racer, but now I have 2 hour commute each way to work and back and 2 very busy daughters who are competitive dancers that must be driven to and from studios two or three times an evening.
Excuses, I know but days are just too short sometimes to stay on top of things and run around to get estimates and second opinions, you have to try and trust people sometimes.
Does not always work out.

Do you have 2wd, 4x4 auto, and 4x4 low? I really don't think there was another t case you could get in 95, other than a 4405.

I believe thats what it had if I remember correctly from when i swaped mine out.

Anyway, good luck, welcome to the site dancedad

If you go back and look it up, in 95 the AWD 4405 was an upgrade option. 1354 was stock. Most came with the AWD though I suspect.

have 2, 2hi & 4 low, thanks for the help, I got it out. definately a 4405, called the bone yard and they said they had one in stock from a '96 for $495.I went down and haggled a bit and they agreed to sell to me for $250 with a four month warranty!
Went to get it off the shelf and it was not there, damn computer inventory rats!!!
Still hunting for one now.

Do you mean you have 2wd, 4auto, and 4low, or do you have 2wd, 4high, and 4low?

Dancedad , I am in the same situation- no time to do myself what iknow I can do more reliably
