I didn't know Explorers had neutral, have you tried 4WD low? I know in some cases, the case will fail and act like neutral except in 4-Low

He said he will be driving down the road and it will slip into neutral generally he could get it back in gear but now it is stuck

Bev it sounds like the range slider is slipping out of engagement (you will hear a buzzing or grinding noise if this is the case). Rebuild it if you can, and do the upgrades while you are in there. And I absolutely agree with RandomNerd, that is the sign of a failing T-Case for sure if you can get LOW range but not HIGH.
