- 2002 Explorer Sport Trac
I have a 2002 Explorer Sport Trac 115,000 miles. Automatic transmission 2WD. Lately I have been having problems with my RPMs. It seems like they are running high but it is happening intermittently. I will be sitting at a stop light and when I step on the gas to accelerate and the car runs about 1000-1500 RPMs higher than usual and sometimes stays like that (for example usually cruising at 50mph the car runs between 1700 and 2000 RPM but lately it sometimes is running at 3000-3500 RPMs). This is on and off, and it kind of feels like the car isn't shifting properly. Also every once and a while when I start the car the RPMs are higher than usual. I was thinking it may be an oxygen or fuel system issue but the car isn't giving me a check engine light which usually it would. So I was wondering if it might be a bad shift solenoid or valve gasket in the transmission? I took it to the mechanic and of course it wasn't acting up at that time so they said they cant even begin to diagnose the problem without being able to see it. Any ideas?
