Transmission Issues

have 1995 Explorer Eddie Bauer with 4.0 l 4X4. Can some one tell me what tranmission is in it. After driving it for about 15 minutes the trans keeps slipping for about 4-5 seconds. If I let off the gas and push the gas pedel down again it will catch. This happens in 2nd, 3rd, and fourth gear. Don't kow the history of the truck and I bought it just a few months ago with 96,000 miles.

It is an automatic with o/d button. Same issus with the o/d button off.

being a 95, it has the A4LD.

sounds like it might need a rebuild.

but have you checked the fluid? how does it look?

It's always worth yanking the valve body and checking/replacing the valve body gaskets while changing the fluid/filter. If you plan on keeping the truck it would be a good time to install a rebuilt valve body with all possible improvements. You could find that you have a blown valve body gasket. Not uncommon I believe with those transmissions.

Even if you end up rebuilding the transmission, you'll want the rebuilt valve body so you really won't be out any money anyways.

my bad. I thought it was 96 they went to the newer ones.

either way, definately check fluid first. Would be a good idea to replace all the fluid, especially if you don't know what kind of maintenance it previously had.


FWIW, I had a similar issue in my truck, that got progressively worse (very quickly). I ended up having to get the tranny rebuilt, as it would not shift above 2nd or 3rd.

If this is all new to you then I strongly suggest that you read the transmission rebuild threads... there is also VB rebuild threads. One of the site venders sells rebuilt VB's...

It's pretty easy to pull a VB, you need a good inch pound tourque wrench to reinstall one though.
