I have a 4r70w in a '97 mountaineer with 171k miles. So i have been noticing torque converter shudder around 45mph, as confirmed by 2 mechanics. The dealer said no codes were present, but the fluid was "burnt to a crisp". New fluid was put in with no change in the issue. I am planning on keeping the truck, but i have never experienced transmission issues. Can I get just the TC replaced? or is it better just to get a remanufactured trans with this mileage and a questionable service history. Would rather get something done before some major mechanical failure occurs and it quits all together. How much would a reman trans cost, and what is the average labor hours put in?

Following. I have the same issue. Thinking about just replacing the TC myself.

I had my 4R70W rebuilt last summer including a new torque converter for $1300. If you're in N GA I'll give you my transmission man's name.

What fluid was used? Was an entire flush done with MERCON V product? (that is required)

One last thing you can try for these 4r70ws: Dr tranny instant shudder fix. If it is just the torque converter it may work. You have nothing to loose and it may save you a ton of cash. I hate to suggest additives but this product really works. Do some research on it. I have T-bird pushing 300k and the 4r70w shifts like new with two tubes, going on 30k now.

there may also be PCM reflashes for that issue

One last thing, are you sure it is not ignition related? touch the brake when it happens (even if you are on the gas), that disengages the torque converter. if it goes away immediately it is the TC. Bad coils, plugs, wires can cause the same feeling.

did the wires/plugs not too long ago, and tested the coils...all good. I know about the brake test, but i can never do it because when it vibrates it only does so for like a second
