I have a 92 explorer sport 4x4 with a 5 speed manual transmission and it has 193,000 miles on it. On thursday of last week i started hearing a high pitched noise in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and i little bit in 5th but not as noticable. I took it into the mechanic i go to and he is telling me that it is the input bearing in the transmission. Am i able to just replace the bearing or do i need another transmission?

You could replace the bearing, but you will have to remove the transmission, transfer case, driveshaft, and catalytic converter. It might be a good time to replace the clutch assembly while it's already out of the vehicle. I have a couple of links in my list of useful threads (# 47) for rebuilding an M5OD transmission.

Is the bearing called an input bearing or is there another name for it?

thanks for the help...i asked the mechanic yesterday if it was a throwout bearing or a pilot bearing and he said no its an input bearing in the transmission and i have never heard of an input bearing...i know there is an input shaft bearing but im going to ask the mechanic tonight when i get off work what it really is and if i can just replace it...

The input bearing is the bearing that the input shaft rides on. Its inside the transmission.

This is different the the pilot bushings and different than the throw out bearing.

I have a chevy 1 ton with a bad input bearing.. I have to take the transmission out, open it up and replace all the bearings (some are needle bearings in my case.. I don't know about the m50d)

would i be able to replace that bearing or would i need to get a different tranny? sounds like the mechanic i went to is just looking for another transmission...and i dont want to spend that much on my explorer being that it has 193,000 miles on it

Im rebuilding my tranny...and i have ran into a little problem that i need help on....my manual is telling me that i need to remove the exhaust in order to drop the tranny out...is there any way to drop it out without doing so? And also how do i get to the top bolts on the transmission?

You need to remove the catalytic converter. You could get to the top bolts with either a wobble extension, or sockets with universal joints connected to the same socket (not a separate universal connected to a socket).

I've heard it is possible to remove the a4ld w/out removing the exhuast, but IF its possible, its gonna be a very tight fit. I'd remove the bolts at the manifold/pipe connection and let it drop some.

To get the top bolts, a long extensions (I use a 3 ft extensions) with a wobble socket (non deep) made it possible to reach. The other thing I did to help reach it is let the transmission drop some (remove the trans mount and lower the trans some). This changed the angle on the bolts and made it easier to get to.
