This is a good example of why one should never have 2 service manuals. Ready to pull tranny for clutch work and refer to Haynes, which instructs to remove exhaust crossover pipe. Chilton, however, does not list such step. Does anyone know, definitively, if the exhaust crossover pipe has to removed on '92 Sport (it appears to be a ***** to remove on 4L engine) to get the transmission out. A related question is whether the clutch housing must come out with transmission or can they be separated, i.e. can tranny come out first then clutch housing? Both manuals are unclear on this point. Thanks

I don't know for sure with yours, but I didn't have to drop the crossover to the an A4LD out from behind a 2.9. It was easier to remove the cats though. I've done it both ways.

i have a 92 sport and i had to pull the crosover pipe to have enough room for the gearshift nipple to clear. it is fun to get the exhaust bolts out of the headers too good luck

I'm in the process of swapping trannys on my 92 Sport. Removing the Y-pipe isn't that bad. I used about 18" of extensions and a cheater pipe on the ratchet to get the bolts at the manifold. Using some penetrating spray beforehand helps.

air tools help too.

Does anyone know what size this bolt is on the y pipe to headers? I want to make sure I put the right size on before I torque into it. I can't get a 13 to fit on there and 14 feels too big... It's probably due to rust buildup and I'm not sure If I should use this 9/16 that feels tighter on it....

the exhaust uses stadard size, so its either 3/8 or 9/16 most likely
