Ok, a little back story: 3 years ago i had the transmission replaced on my explorer due to a hopping or skipping in acceleration, and that cost me more than both arms and a leg at $4500.00. It didnt fix the problem with the skipping and the transmission came back making a whining noise from around the bell housing. We asked the mechanic what happened, and he said that he thinks its the Transmission Fluid Pump. After almost two years on a new transmission, and fed up with the problem of skipping and jumping, I got on here a few days ago to look the problem up and I just figured out that the transfer case / 4x4 Control Module was bad becaus the skipping, and or jumping during acceleration stopped when I unplugged the 4x4CM. So now i am in the process of replacing the 4x4CM.

The question is this: Why would there be a high pitched whining noise coming from the transmission that sounds like an R/C car. This sound get higher pitched with the RPMS of the vehicle as if what ever is making it is directly connected to the motor, spinning at the same rate. The mechanic said it was from the bell housing, and that it might be the torque converter. I have stock exhaust on the SUV but the whining noise is so loud that when you crank the car up, you cant here the V8 Exhaust you should here coming from the engine. The only time you can hear the roar of the V8, is when you are at about 3500-7000 RPMS when it drops below to 750-2500 all you can really hear is a whine. Is this a problem that i am just going to have to live with because this is a new transmission, and they all make that noise when they are rebuilt? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

I'm confused. Is the whining present no matter whether the 4X4CM is connected or not? And was it always present since the new transmission was installed or was it something present beforehand that just never went away even with the new tranny?

I have a few thoughts on this but I'd like to have that cleared up before I share them.

I'm also confused on how any mechanic can charge $4500 to replace a transmission and be WRONG. I hope he is no longer your mechanic?

The pounding feeling I explained was the 4x4 control mod. trying to put the car in 4x4 while I was driving on the road in normal conditions.

I unplugged the 4x4CM and that problem went away. When we had the transmission rebuilt we were having it done because we thought there was something wrong inside the transmission, causing the skipping/jerking/pounding during acceleration. The transmission came back with the whinning noise and the pounding feeling still during acceleration.

I did a little research and diagnosing myself and realized that the whinning noise is present in all gears, P R N D 1 2 3, so when ever the car is running there is a whinning noise that gets higher and lower with the rate of the engine RPMs. According to a website I was looking at, this would be the transmission fluid pump which is directly connected to the drive shaft. I am looking to have the pump itself replaced, and according to a transmission expert that is a terrible idea, and the transmission needs to be rebuilt.

I thought it was the torque converter at first, but I read that the TC would only whine or only whine loud enough for you to hear it when in gear accelerating or with your foot on the break (while wheels are held stationary).

Thoughts?
