Tricky Tailgate repair

Hi All, Last week one of the main tailgate struts jammed open, on trying to close it, I (or rather, my wife - car destruction certificate) managed to bust the small ball that is fitted to the tailgate that the strut attaches to. Now this is welded (I think) to a small bracket which is definately spot welded to the main tailgate. At best I imagine it will be a tricky repair, at worst I can see a new tailgate being required.
Has anyone got any other ideas ?

The broke side the the right hand (drivers !) side.
