Well i dont know exactly where to start... so here's the full story

I've been a fan of the 4.0L OHV engine for a few years now. good fuel economy, decent power, small size, roller cam, MAF, etc.

I have recently acquired a little 1962 Volvo 122 which i understand weighs under 2500 pounds... Well, I'm not even considering keeping a volvo engine in it. because i like horsepower, fuel economy, reliability etc... all the things i'm hoping a 4.0 can deliver for me. (im impressed with my 93 explorer's mileage)... so I'll be swapping in a 4.0 with an e4ld trans. and i figured for a little extra kick without sacrificing much (if any) in the way of fuel economy, i could add a turbo or better yet twin turbos. plus it would have a nice cool-factor and be pretty unique. I found one old thread where somebody had done this but the pics were gone and there wasn't a whole lot of info.

I've built and modified quite a few engines, but i'm pretty new when it comes to the forced induction world. so i'm hoping for some pointers/experience and other ideas where it comes to the turbo arrangement.

how much power will the stock bottom end hold up to? how much boost can i run, if any, with the stock fuel injection system? do i need to upgrade anything to run a mild boost level? injectors?

so nobody has any ideas or even thinks this is a cool project?

c' mon guys.. dont make me use a CHEVY engine! haha j/k

I don't know much about forced induction either, but you get a bump for a cool idea!

I'm thinking most people will probably point you in the direction of the 4.0 SOHC for turbo. it has a slightly higher stock rev limit, it gets better mileage, and it has a bit more power out of the box. and it fits in the same space!
only thing to watch out for is the idler chains or whatever they are. those are the weak point on that engine.

if it'll fit in the engine compartment, I would consider a 5.0 V8 from an explorer. theres a lot more info on it and you would have even more power!

not to harrass the OHV though! that's what I have and I love it! the things a tank. only thing to watch out for is keeping the carbon out of it! otherwise, awsome little engine. I REALLY want to swap something cool into my explorer, and the OHV will DEFINITELY be put into something else in that case

I have a 96 2d 4.0 efi with a 5 speed and I want to turbo mine to but also I want to rebuild it completely and upgrade it with bigger cam and all that but I recently got my hands on a 460 big block for helping my cousin move some stuff for his old house to his new house and I'm honestly thinking about getting airbag suspension and dropping that 460 in it and putting fat tires on it with custom steel bumpers on front and back for better weight distribution and building a role cage like what would y'all think about that jw

Good luck fitting a 460 in there

Not impossible. Add about a foot to the front of the car, body lift, solid front axle. Engine would have to sit well above the frame rails for the exhaust.

Turbo and a4ld should never be in the same thread

I just happen to have one of those cruise ship anchors weighing in at about 700lbs.
This came out of my 1977 LTD Interceptor and has been sitting in the garage for 39 years. Double valve springs, 6qt. pan with police cam. Plan was to stuff it into a Cobra GT kit car.
With the 3 speed C6 and 2.91 or was it .93 gears it would do an honest 132MPH. The engine I put in its' place would do 140.:)

77 LTD is a land yacht.

My 1989 f250 Bigfoot cruiser has a 460…. Well it had a 460…
Mine is a 472 with a rv cam and headers….
Sucker will push some snow
But costs $75 for a day if plowing
550 cfm Holley double pumper and some aftermarket intake. The truck came with the house… she’s a beast! I’ve fixed it up, many many repairs. And been stuck countless times. We plow 2 miles of off road forest road. I came to find out they made a limited number of Bigfoot cruisers, it has a power down back window

Badass engine

When working for the Ford dealer the state police fleet garage was two blocks away and would send work to us. The last cruiser and passenger car that a 460 was used being 1978. For some trivia the cruisers had electric fuel pumps hence no fuel pump eccentric on the cam gear bolt. I primarily did the engine and rear axle work at the 12 man shop and pulled many engines apart for repair, none of the senior guys liked smelling of gear oil when going home so got that job. The 460 heads were heavy removing in car but mostly managed on my own with some assistance. Had a valve job to do on a used Pontiac car with a 455 engine, I could barely pick that one up. Made the Ford look like childs play.
Time to go for this engine and have made arrangements it is going to the CT State Police museum for a 1978 cruiser they have.

That’s really cool!
